STATS ANKENY, Iowa?The Iowa State soccer team started its 2010 campaign with a 0-0 double-overtime draw against Drake Friday evening at the Prairie Ridge Sports Complex. The Cyclones statistically controlled the action, but could not find back of the net.
The Cyclones outshot the Bulldogs 27-16 in the match, while also having 10 shots on goal to Drake's six. Iowa State held a significant corner-kick edge at 6-0.
Freshman
Jennifer Dominguez led the Cyclone offense with seven shots, and fellow freshmen
Erin Green registered four.
“We played hard and battled,” Iowa State head coach
Wendy Dillinger said. “We saw a lot of good scoring opportunities and created a lot of good chances but we couldn't find the back of the net. I felt we were a little tense and timid in front of the goal.”
The match marked the second consecutive tilt with Iowa State (0-0-1) and Drake (0-0-1) that ended in a scoreless draw. The two squads finished 0-0 Sept. 20, 2009 at Drake.
Iowa State held the statistical advantage in the first half, with a 10-4 shots edge. The Cyclones had five shots on goal to Drake's one. Freshman
Brittany Morgan had two solid scoring chances for Iowa State, with one rattling the Drake crossbar. Sophomore
Amanda Cacciatore also had a clear scoring chance, forcing a save from the Bulldog goalkeeper Kalena Litch.
The Cyclones continued to dominate in the second half, as they closed regulation with a 20-12 shots edge. Junior
Mary Kate McLaughlin highlighted the half with an inspiring run through the Bulldog defense that culminated with a shot off the post.
Senior
Ashley Costanzo played the full 110 minutes in the Cyclone goal and registered six saves.
Iowa State plays Northern Iowa Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex. Last season Iowa State downed the Panthers 1-0 in an overtime contest.
