STATSCEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Iowa State wrestling team physically dominated Northern Illinois en route to a 23-11 victory in the first consolation round of the National Duals in the UNI-Dome. A pin from
Andrew Sorenson at 165 pounds and a technical fall from top-ranked
Jon Reader at 174 pounds led the way for the Cyclones.
In an extremely tight match with the Huskies' Izzy Montemayor at 133 pounds,
Ben Cash hit a takedown with only one second remaining in overtime to secure a 5-3 victory and three valuable points for his team.
Chris Drouin continued his strong day with a dominant 7-2 victory over Tristen DeShazer at 141 pounds, and after the match Northern Illinois was deducted a team point for misconduct.
Sorenson brought the crowd to their feet with a punishing pin over Matt Mougin at 165 pounds. Sorenson was in on a shot, and threw in a deep half-nelson to throw Mougin to his back and earn the pin at the 5:32 mark of the match.
Reader turned his opponent three separate times, and although unable to get the pin, earned his team five team points with a dominant technical fall over Zach Benzio. The victory is Reader's 14th bonus point victory of the season and runs his record to 20-0.
Phil Hawes won a strategic battle against Mike Lukowski at 197 pounds. Hawes used an early takedown and good defense en route to a 3-2 victory.
Kyle Simonson once again finished the dual with a victory for the Cyclones. The Algona, Iowa native racked up over three minutes of riding time on his way to an easy 7-0 victory.
The Cyclones will face the loser of the Wisconsin/American dual Saturday night.
