AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State soccer team allowed two goals in a five-minute stretch of the second half and fell to Baylor 2-0 at the ISU Soccer Complex Sunday evening. The loss drops Iowa State to 6-7-1 on the season and 0-4 in Big 12 play. The win moves the Bears to 11-2-2 overall and 3-1-1 in conference competition.
After a scoreless first half, Iowa State threatened the Baylor net multiple times in the early proceedings of the second half. Emily Goldstein hit the crossbar and Jennifer Dominguez, Emily Hejlik and Mary Kate McLaughlin all had shots for the Cyclones in the first 10 minutes.
Baylor opened up the scoring in 59th minute as Lisa Sliwinski played a good combination of passes with Justine Hovden to eventually leave Sliwinski one-on-one with Cyclone keeper Andrea Swanson. Sliwinski slotted home from 10 yards out. It was Sliwinski's fourth goal of the 2011 campaign.
Baylor doubled its lead in the 64th minute as Alexa Wilde controlled a deflection off a corner and looped a high-arching shot over the outstretched hands of Swanson in the top corner.
Swanson went on to make six saves in the match, as the freshman played all 90 minutes in goal for the Cyclones.
Iowa State continued to press forward looking for a goal but it was to no avail as Baylor keeper Courtney Seelhorst stopped all comers to the Baylor net, posting three saves for her ninth shutdown of the year.
Baylor controlled the flow of play in the first half. With the wind at their backs, the Bears outshot the Cyclones 10-2 and 4-0 on shots on goal. Vic Hoffman led the Bears' attack with three shots while Hovden came off the bench to provide two shots. Iowa State got shots from Brittany Morgan and Maggie Bruckman in the first 45 minutes.
The Cyclones return to action Friday Oct. 14 when they travel to Oklahoma for a 7 p.m. CDT Big 12 match.
