SAN MARCOS, Texas - Playing in their final game of the CenturyLink Classic, the Cyclone softball team (6-4, 0-0 Big 12) fell victim to a big first inning by the Purdue Boilermakers (4-3, 0-0 Big Ten) en route to an 11-2 run-rule loss in five innings.
Pitcher Tori Torrescano (1-2), faced six batters and gave up five hits in the bottom of the first inning before being replaced by Bree Holliday with no outs in the frame. Holliday allowed her two inherited runners to score before getting three quick groundouts to end the inning with Purdue leading 6-0.
Second baseman Sara Rice led off the top of the third with a double but got no closer to home as Purdue's Lauren Grant (1-0) shut down the next three batters to move the game to send the Cyclones back into the field.
Purdue plated two more runners in their half of the third, aided by a Holliday wild pitch and an error by shortstop Sara Davison, to take the 8-0 lead.
Dalyn Varela, hitting .400 at the conclusion of the weekend, got the Cyclones their two runs of the day with her second homerun of the season, scoring herself and designated player Torrescano who had reached on a fielder's choice, shrinking Purdue's lead to six, 8-2.
Lauren Kennewell replace Holliday in the bottom of the fourth as the Boilermakers scored their final three runs with RBIs by Shelby Kramer and Aimee Gingerich and an illegal pitch by Kennewell.
Cyclone left fielder Carleigh Berry had thoughts of a rally in the fifth, smashing a one-out double in her second at bat of the day. Berry would be the only Iowa State player to reach third on Sunday, advancing on a groundout by Heidi Kidwell. However, Grant worked Bianca Lopez into grounding out to second base to end the game.
Over the three days in San Marcos, Iowa State opponents tapped Cyclone pitchers for a .523 batting average while the struggling Iowa State offense hit .280.
Next weekend the Cyclones head east to Charleston, S.C. to the College of Charleston Cougar Classic to play teams from Marist, Liberty, Notre Dame, Drexel and Charleston. Iowa State will start the weekend on Friday against Marist at 9 a.m. CST with Liberty to follow at 11 a.m. CST.
