AUSTIN, Texas - A goal by sophomore Jennifer Dominguez with 5:54 remaining gave the Iowa State soccer team hopes of a late rally Sunday against Texas. However, the Longhorns held on to win 2-1 Sunday at the Mike A. Myers Stadium in the Big 12 Conference match.
Dominguez's goal was her third of 2011 and came off an assist from fellow sophomore Brittany Morgan. With the assist, Morgan added to her team-leading nine points this season, just two off her freshman campaign output.
"Jennifer's goal was a great all-around buildup," Iowa State head coach Wendy Dillinger said. "She made a great run through Texas' midfield and drew their defenders up. She then played a ball to Brittany Morgan and Britt got to the end line. Brittany played it back across and Jessica Stewart smartly let the ball run on. Jennifer was there and put it into the back of the net."
The loss dropped Iowa State to 6-5-1 overall with a 0-2 start in league action. Texas improved to 7-3/1-1 Big 12. The result continued a recent trend of tight games between Iowa State and Texas. The past five matches between the two teams have been decided by no more than one goal. In 2007, Iowa State and Texas tied.
The Longhorns came out of the gates strong and were rewarded with the opening goal 22:21 into the contest off the foot of Nina Frausing Pedersen. Texas doubled its lead when Taylor Knaak scored with just over 10 minutes remaining in the fixture.
"Their first goal was one we should not have allowed," Dillinger said. "Texas played a free kick from 45 yards out into the box and it bounced into the back of the net untouched. Texas' second goal was one that you have to give them a lot of credit on, and our defense did everything right. It was just a good buildup by Texas, and you have to give them credit for it."
After a first half that Texas controlled statistically, Iowa State fared much better after the intermission. The Cyclones had a 6-4 shots edge in the second half while also having three shots on goal to Texas' two after the break.
"We came out and played very timid the whole first half," Dillinger said. "After we told them at halftime we have to battle, we played more aggressively in the second half. Our backline started tackling better and getting into the attack. It allowed us to start controlling the ball much better and creating chances, which we did not do in the first half. I am happy with how we played in the second half, but we cannot wait 45 minutes. We have to come out aggressively from the start."
The Cyclones split time at goalkeeper in the match. Sophomore Maddie Jobe played the opening 45 minutes and made a pair of saves while allowing one goal. Freshman Andrea Swanson came on after halftime. The Clive, Iowa, native made one save and conceded a goal. Swanson took the loss and her record fell to 3-3.
The Cyclones do not play for nearly two weeks. Iowa State's next match is Oct. 7 when No. 2 Oklahoma State travels to Ames for a 6:30 p.m. CDT match at the ISU Soccer Complex.
