AMES, Iowa - Iowa State fell to No. 2 Oklahoma State 1-0 Friday at the ISU Soccer Complex after the Cowgirls' Krista Lopez scored with two seconds remaining. With harsh winds impacting the game throughout, the Cyclones (6-6-1/0-3 Big 12) battled the Big-12-leading Cowgirls (15-0/4-0 Big 12) to a near scoreless regulation.
Neither team could find the back of the net until the final moments of the match. Oklahoma State senior Krista Lopez ended the Cyclones' hopes of upsetting the highly ranked opponent on a goal with just two seconds remaining on the clock on unassisted goal.
Iowa State held the Cowgirls scoreless in the first half despite playing into 20 mph winds. Oklahoma State had a number of attacking attempts, including three corner kicks in the first nine minutes.
Cyclone Emily Hejlik, who made her first start of an injury-plagued senior season, had a stout defensive performance for the Cyclones on the right side. Time and time again senior Mary Kate McLaughlin smf freshman Lindsay Frank blocked cross attempts and shut down the Cowgirl offense in the first half.
The possession-game was evenly matched in the second half. Offensive efforts by sophomore Emily Goldstein and senior Jennifer Dominguez kept pressure on Oklahoma State. A corner kick by Goldstein at the 82:54 mark gave Dominguez a nice look at the goal, but the Lubbock, Texas, native fired a shot that went wide left. Dominguez led the Cyclones in shots with three, while the Cowgirls were led by Lopez's six shots, three of which were on goal.
Iowa State held Oklahoma State well under its season average in goals (2.6), allowing just one goal by the Cowgirls.
Freshman goalkeeper Andrea Swanson had a career-high seven saves against Oklahoma State.
The Cyclones return to action Sunday at 5 p.m. when Baylor comes to the ISU Soccer Complex for a Big 12 showdown.
