AMES, Iowa - Cyclone freshman pitcher Madison Jones threw 4.1 innings in relief, giving up no runs on just three hits, but the Iowa State softball team (9-17, 0-2 Big 12) fell to the No. 6 Texas Longhorns (25-2, 4-0 Big 12) on Saturday by a score of 7-3.
Texas started the scoring in the top of the first, notching four runs including a three-run home run by Nadia Taylor off of Cyclone starting pitcher Taylor Smith (1-1). Smith faced seven batters and recorded two outs for Iowa State, giving up four runs on five hits, walking none and striking out one.
The Cyclones answered back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by junior Tori Torrescano's two-RBI double to left field to score teammates Erica Miller and Lexi Slater. Cyclone sophomore Sara Rice later followed suit and brought Torrescano home on an RBI single to close the deficit to 4-3 after one inning.
Texas was able to extend it's lead in the following innings, scoring one run in the top of the second inning, as well as solo home runs by Kim Bruins and Taylor Hoagland in the top of the third, to go up 7-3.
The Cyclones held the Longhorns scoreless through the next three innings behind Jones' solid relief work. Jones entered the game late in the third inning to relieve fellow freshman Miranda Kemp and finished out the game.
Cyclone center fielder Amber Ewert was perfect at the plate on the day, batting 3-for-3, and is hitting .571 (4-for-7) through two games against Texas.
Texas pitcher Rachel Fox (8-0) threw the entire seven innings, giving up three runs on seven hits, walking two and fanning four Cyclones.
The Cyclones will be back in action at the Southwest Athletic Complex on Sunday at noon CST to finish up their three-game series with the Longhorns.
