DES MOINES, Iowa - The Cyclones (12-25, 1-8 Big 12) came up short on Tuesday, falling 8-6 to Drake (17-19, 8-4 MVC). Senior Dalyn Varela extended her hitting streak to four games, tallying two hits and two RBIs for Iowa State.
Trailing 8-3 in the top of the seventh, Iowa State mounted a comeback behind three-straight singles from Erica Miller, Tori Torrescano and Sara Rice to load the bases with no outs. The next batter, Varela, took a ball to the wall in left center for a two-run double to chase starter Jordan Gronewold (13-13) and shorten the lead to 8-5. Two batters and one out later, Lexi Slater hit a sacrifice fly out to left to bring home pinch runner Evan Folks (Rice). Centerfielder Amber Ewert struck out to end the Cyclone threat.
In the circle, Gronewold threw six plus innings, allowing nine hits, six runs, four earned, walked four and struck out two. Rebekah Schmidt recorded her seventh save of the season with one inning of no-hit softball, walking one and fanning two.
Iowa State scored its first run before notching its first hit of the day in the top of the first. Ewert walked to leadoff the contest and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sara Davison. After a strikeout by Miller, Ewert advanced to third on a passed ball by Drake catcher Rose Magaddino and eventually came home on a wild pitch by Gronewold.
Drake pulled even in the second frame before posting four runs in the bottom of the third with RBI doubles from Torey Craddock and Gronewold sandwiched around an RBI single down the right field line by Hayley Nybo for the 5-1 Bulldog lead.
Ewert and Davison got two back for the Cyclones in the fourth. Ewert singled to score Varela who was hit by a pitch to start off the inning. Davison grounded out to second for the second out of the inning, bring home Smith who doubled earlier in the inning.
The sixth was another big inning for the home team as Drake added three more runs to its lead with a sacrifice fly from pinch hitter Sarah Brewer and a two-run RBI from Amy Pierce, giving the Bulldogs the 8-3 lead.
On Friday the Cyclones are in Stillwater, Okla. to play the first of a three game series with Oklahoma State. First pitch on Friday is set for 7 p.m. CST.
