AMES, Iowa – Coming off their sweep of Oklahoma State last weekend, the Cyclones (17-19, 3-3 Big 12) will play a home-and-home series with Drake on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Cyclones and Bulldogs (21-14, 7-3 MVC) played contrasting games last season. In Ames, Taylor Smith won a 1-0 pitchers' duel behind an RBI-double from Erica Miller. In Des Moines, the bats were the story as the teams combined for 21 hits and 14 runs, with the Bulldogs fending off a three-run seventh-inning rally by the Cyclones for the 8-6 win.
Iowa State is riding a three-game winning streak and a 3-0 record at the new Cyclone Sports Complex, having swept Oklahoma State to pull to .500 in league play. Sarah Hawryluk proved to be the backbone of the Cyclone offense during the series, hitting .600 (6-for-10) with a walk, driving in two runs, scoring four and stealing four bases.
Tori Torrescano and Lexi Slater each had breakout games against the Cowgirls. Torrescano drove in five runs; all with two outs, in Friday's 11-8 win, hitting her 13th home run of the season. On Saturday, Slater went 3-for-3 at the plate with two home runs and five RBI.
In Drake, the Cyclone hitters will likely see a true starter-reliever tandem in Jorden Gronewold (12-7) and Rebekah Schmidt. Gronewold has started 32 games, completing just one, and reliever Schmidt has tallied 97 strikeouts in her 103.2 innings of work, including three starts.
The Cyclone defense will be on its toes when Amy Pierce and Macie Silliman reach base. The two players are a combined 34-for-34 in stolen base attempts this season; Pierce has an on-base percentage of .425 and Silliman sits on a .328 OBP for the year.
Both Tuesday's game in Ames and Wednesday's contest in Des Moines are set for 4 p.m. CDT starts.
Cyclone Notebook
• Iowa State swept its three-game series against Oklahoma State last weekend, the program's first sweep of a conference series since 2010 and the first since the Big 12 expanded to the three-game format in 2012.
• The last time Iowa State defeated Oklahoma State three times in a season was in 1987.
• The Cyclones are one a three-game winning streak in conference play, the first three-game streak in league play since 2009, which spanned the final two games of the regular season and the first game of the Big 12 tournament. All three wins were against Kansas.
• The 2013 squad is hurdling up the record charts, currently five RBI away from the program record of 196, eight runs away from the record of 225 and seven stolen bases away from the Iowa State record of 70.
• The Cyclones are hitting .300 this season, the highest batting average in program history.
• Iowa State hit .378 and scored 28 runs against the Cowgirls, led by Sarah Hawryluk's .600 average (6-for-10). Hawryluk also had a team-high four stolen bases on the weekend.
• Overall, four Cyclones hit .400 or better in the Cyclone Sports Complex's debut weekend and seven hit above .300.
• Senior Erica Miller tied the Iowa State career RBI record on Sunday, driving in two runs to total 134 RBI in her career.
• Maddie Reese and Lexi Slater both hit two home runs, their firsts of the season, against Oklahoma State; both of Slater's long balls coming on Saturday in her second career multi-home run game.
• Reese hit her first two home runs of the season in different games but in identical situations: leading off the bottom of the third against OSU ace Kat Espinosa.
• Tori Torrescano and Slater tied career-highs with five RBI in a game this weekend. Torrescano drove in five runs Friday, while Slater's big game came Saturday.
• Iowa State has 78 two-out RBI this season, including 21 from Tori Torrescano, who has hit six home runs with two-outs. The 78 two-out RBI account for 41% of Iowa State's RBI this season and both Jorden Spendlove (12) and Miller (11) join Torrescano with double-digit two-out RBI.

• Freshman Brittany Gomez holds Iowa State freshman records in stolen bases (22, also a school record) and runs with 38. Two more runs scored would make Gomez the first Cyclone since 1989 to reach 40 runs scored in a season.
• Torrescano (40) and Miller (37) are closing in on the single-season record for RBI (44), set by Torrescano in 2012.
• Torrescano is also set to tie her single-season home run record of 14. She has 13 through April 7. Her 23 walks this season are three shy of the school record.
• Over the last two seasons, Iowa State has struggled in pinch hitting situations, hitting .200 in 2012 and .038 in 2011. No player with multiple pinch hit at-bats has hit above .167 in either of those seasons. This season, Iowa State is hitting .303 in pinch hit at-bats and Liana Henry is 6-for-10 (.600) in pinch hitting appearances this season.
• The Cyclones are 15-2 this season when tallying at least as many hits as their opponents, and Friday and Sunday's games were the first won by the Cyclones this season when they trail their opponent in hits.
• The team is 14-3 both when its foes score five or fewer runs and 16-3 when a game is tied or when the Cyclones lead after four innings.
