AMES, Iowa – West Virginia battled back from a 21-7 second-quarter deficit to defeat Iowa State 37-24 Saturday afternoon at Jack Trice Stadium in the final home game of the season for the Cyclones. The Cyclones fall to 2-9 overall and 0-8 in Big 12 play, while West Virginia ends its regular season 7-5 overall and 5-4 in conference action.
Keys of the Game
With Iowa State trailing 27-24, Austin Fischer took a field goal snap and converted the fake for a first down to extend the Cyclones' drive. Three plays later, West Virginia's Terrell Chestnut picked off Sam Richardson in the end zone to stall the Cyclones. West Virignia went down and scored on a Daikiel Shorts' 15-yard TD reception to make it a two score game at 34-24.
West Virginia would tack on a field goal later for the final score.
The Cyclones trailed 7-0 early in the first quarter but Aaron Wimberly scored two touchdowns, one by run and one by catch to give Iowa State the 14-7 lead at the end of the quarter. The Cyclones would extend the lead to 21-7 on a 29-yard pass from Richardson to Tad Ecby.
The Cyclones had a difficult time getting anything else going as the Mountaineers stormed back to score 30 of the game's final 33 points.
Offensive Players of Note...
Aaron Wimberly tallied 77 yards and a score on the ground in his final home game. It was his seventh career rushing touchdown and the ninth of his career. Wimberly also had five catches for 30 yards and a touchdown, giving him four career games with two scores.
Jarvis West led the Cyclones, who played without star tight end E.J. Bibbs, with six catches for 42 yards.
Defensive Players of Note...
Linebacker Brian Mills led the Cyclones with nine tackles in his second career start. Dale Pierson forced a fumble and recovered it in the fourth quarter.
Playing in his final home game, Ames, Iowa, native Cory Morrissey registered seven tackles and two quarterback hurries.

*Darian Cotton made his first career start for the Cyclones at strong safety. A total of 19 Cyclones have made their first career starts this season.
*Richardson has 1,024 yards rushing. He is the fourth quarterback in ISU history to rush for 1,000 yards in his career.
*Richardson moved up to fifth on the career completions list (405).
*Kamari Cotton-Moya recovered his first career fumble.
*Allen Lazard has caught a pass in all 11 games this season.
*ISU is now 3-3 in home finales under Paul Rhoads.
