LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The No. 17 Iowa State wrestling team finished tied for 19th at the 34th annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational with 46 points. The Cyclones saw two of their wrestlers earn spots on the podium in Earl Hall (4th) and Tanner Weatherman (7th).
This marks the third time in their careers that Hall and Weatherman have finished on the podium at the prestigious CKLV.
Medal Rounds
In the third-place match, it was Earl Hall vs. Virginia's George DiCamillo. Hall wrestled to one better than his seed, finishing fourth and falling to DiCamillo.
Early in this match, DiCamillo was on the attack. At the end of the first period, he held a 6-0 lead over Hall. He tacked on four more points in the second and led 10-1 after two periods. DiCamillo locked up riding time and scored on another takedown in the third to take the third-place bout by 13-3 major-decision.
Hall finished the weekend with a 4-2 record.
For seventh, Weatherman was pitted against UNI's Cooper Moore. The second-seeded Moore scored early in the first period to take a 2-0 lead.
As Moore was looking for back points, Weatherman was able to slip out of his lock and score on a reversal. He then brought the Panther's shoulders to the mat to secure the fall and a seventh-place finish in 0:45.
Weatherman posted a 5-2 record for the tournament.
Consolation Quarterfinals and Semifinals
In the consolation semifinals, Hall faced UNI's Josh Alber in a rematch from yesterday. Just like their first meeting, Hall defeated Alber.
After one period, Hall trailed Alber 2-1. An escape to begin the second kicked off the scoring for an 11-point second period for Hall.
Hall put on an offensive display. He took Alber down with a big upper-body throw and tacked on four more points with a near-fall. Hall scored on two more takedowns in the second period and held a 12-4 advantage going to the third.
In the third, Hall continued to build on his lead scoring six more points on two takedowns and a two-point near-fall. With one point for 1:42 of riding time, Hall defeated Alber by 17-7 major-decision.
In his next match after the blood round, Weatherman faced Harvard's Devon Gobbo. The Harvard 165-pounder defeated Weatherman by 7-3 dec. to send him to the seventh-place medal match.
Round of 12 and Semifinals
The morning session was tough for the Cardinal and Gold. Coming into the day, the Cyclones had five wrestlers still alive in Earl Hall, Dante Rodriguez, Tanner Weatherman, Lelund Weatherspoon and Dane Pestano.
In the semifinals at 133-pounds, it was Earl Hall vs. 2015 National Champion, Cody Brewer. Coming into the match, the two held a career record of 1-1.
Hall scored first in the match but Brewer was quick to his feet and scored to take a 3-2 advantage into the second period. Brewer began the second with an escape. Both wrestlers scored on a takedown, but it was Brewer who was able to ride Hall out to end the second and lock up the riding time point.
In the third, Hall trailed 7-4. The Homestead, Fla. native began the third with an escape but was unable to connect on a series of shots. Brewer would bring him down one more time and to his back to notch the 12-5 dec. over Hall.
On the backside, Iowa State dropped three of the four matches with Weatherman coming away with the lone win.
Weatherman faced Virginia Tech's Dave McFadden in the blood round this morning. The two had already faced each other this season, with McFadden getting the better of Weatherman, 4-3.
This time, it was a different story. Weatherman trailed 4-3 as the second period was coming to a close. In short time, Weatherman was able to flip the position to score two on a reversal to grab a 5-4 lead.
From there, Weatherman put it on the freshman from Virginia Tech. In the third period, he started with an escape and then brought McFadden to the mat. In the top position, he rode hard and garnered 1:13 of RT to advance with a 9-4 dec.
Rodriguez dropped an 11-6 dec. to CSU's Bakersfield, Ian Nickell. Rustin Brarick from Bucknell defeated Weatherspoon 5-1 and Hayden Zilmer of NDSU eliminated Pestano with an 18-2 technical-fall.
