SAN ANTONIO – Iowa State capped off a 2-0 day at the UTSA Classic by completing one of the biggest comeback efforts in school history Friday night at Roadrunner Field. The Cyclones started the day defeating Incarnate Word 8-4 before coming back from a six-run deficit to take down hosts UTSA 12-9. Iowa State is now 8-2 on the season while UIW is 1-10 and the Roadrunners are 8-4.
The Cyclones' 7-1 deficit after two innings against UTSA tied the school record for biggest deficit to overcome. In 2012 at Kansas, Iowa State climbed out of a 6-0-hole after two innings to win 10-9.
Game Two: Iowa State 12 UTSA 9
Aly Cappaert finally got her first home run of the season in the top of the first, sending Kacy Freeze's 0-2 offering over the leftfield wall to put ISU ahead 1-0. The Roadrunners immediately responded in the bottom of the first, as lead-off hitter took a 1-1 pitch off Brianna Weilbacher over the wall in center to tie things up at 1-1. Weilbacher had an inconsistent first frame, also allowing three walks. However, she was able to get out of a bases-loaded jam by striking out Madison Kinley to end the first inning.
UTSA blew the game open in the top of the second inning, bringing across six runs. The 'Runners had four hits and drew five walks in the inning, led by a 3-run home run by Megan Low put UT-San Antonio ahead 7-1.
What happened next was incredible as Iowa State ran off 11 unanswered runs. The Cyclones reduced the Roadrunners' lead to 7-5 as Kelsey McFarland hit her second grand slam of the season to leftfield. In the fifth inning and with two outs, Jorden Spendlove brought down the Cyclone deficit to 7-6 with an RBI-single. Two batters later, and with the bases loaded, Sammie Hildreth recorded her first career RBIs to bring home a pair of runs and get ISU ahead at 8-7. The Roadrunners looked to be out of the inning as Kelsey McFarland grounded out, but an errant throw by UTSA shortstop Courtney Buchman allowed two more Cyclones to score and make it 10-7.
The Cyclones made it 12-7 as Lexi Slater jacked her second home run of the season to center. The Roadrunners would rally with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. However, Stacy Roggentien closed out a strong 5 2/3 inning outing out of the bullpen to bring home the Cyclone win.
Game One: Iowa State 8 Incarnate Word 4
Brittany Gomez started ISU's offensive day with a bunt single and a stolen base. It marked Gomez's 10th stolen base of the season on 10 tries, making ISU's career stolen bases record holder the third player in Iowa State history with at least 10 steals in three seasons (Adi Blackmon and Carleigh Berry). However, the Cyclones struggled to bring her around as she was left stranded on third base. The Cardinals took advantage in the top of the second as pitcher Kristen Hebert led off the inning with a bunt and her pinch runner, Jill Guse, was brought home on an RBI-single by Alex Zepeda.
The Cyclones immediately got to work in the bottom of the second, with Aly Cappaert and Jorden Spendlove walking and Nychole Antillon reaching on a fielder's choice to load the bases with no outs. Two batters later, Kelsey McFarland grounded out, but did enough to bring home Cappaert tie it up at 1-1 after two innings.
The Cardinals quickly bounced back across the next two innings. In the third, Taylor Johnson recorded a one-out single, and was brought home on a two-out single by Lindsey Hood. To lead-off the fourth, Hebert helped her own cause with a home run to put UIW ahead 3-1.
Iowa State stormed back in the bottom of the fourth. Spendlove and Antillon each recorded singles to lead off the inning and two batters later McFarland brought home her second run of the day with a base hit single. Gomez followed that with her second triple of the season to right-center to bring home Antillon and McFarland to put ISU ahead for the first time all day, 4-3. Maddie Reese then recorded a productive out, grounding out to short, but doing enough to bring Gomez home and get ISU ahead 5-3 after four. ISU continued its roll in the fifth as Cappaert got on with a one-out single and Spendlove brought her home with her first homer of the season, to centerfield, to make it 7-3 Cyclones.
After conceding a run in the top half of the sixth, ISU wasted no time restoring its four-run lead as Maddie Reese led off the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run to left-center, making it 8-4 ISU. The homer was Reese's fourth of the season.
Cyclone of the Day
Stacy Roggentien. The senior from Marengo, Iowa had only made three appearances for a combined 4 2/3 innings coming into tonight's doubleheader. With the Cyclones down 5-1 to UTSA, Roggentien came in for the Cyclones. As Iowa State made its dramatic comeback against the Roadrunners, Roggentien's role change from innings eater to closer and she delivered. Roggentien didn't allow a baserunner in the third, fourth and sixth innings and stranded two UTSA players in the fifth. Though she did allow two runs in the seventh inning, Iowa State had done the damage on offense to make the runs obsolete.
Roggentien pitched a career-high 5 2/3 innings, throwing a career-high 108 pitches and striking out a career-high four batters.
