SAN DIEGO – The Iowa State offense struggled to produce as the Cyclones fell to UC-Davis 1-0 Friday morning at the USD Softball Complex. The loss drops ISU to 9-3 on the season while UCD improved to 5-8.
The Aggies were able to cash in on an Iowa State error early on while the Cyclones struggled to drive in runs, stranding six on base throughout the day.
Costly Error
The first two innings did not see much action until late on in the bottom of the second. The Aggies led off the bottom of the frame with a single via Amy Nunez. The next two batters recorded outs, but both were able to advance Nunez to get her to third with two outs.
ISU looked to have gotten out of the jam as Ashley Lotoszynski skied one to short center. Lexi Slater was back peddling with Brittany Gomez coming in from center. It was left to Gomez, but she could not corral it and Nunez scored via an unearned run to make it 1-0 Aggies.
Missed Chances
Gabby Voulgaris got a one-out single in the top of the fifth inning to get ISU a baserunner, and Kelsey McFarland drew a walk to get two on with one out. Gomez bunted both runners over to get two in scoring position with two outs. Aly Cappaert field a shot between first and second, but an outstanding stop by UCD second baseman Alexandra Sotomayor prevented anyone from scoring.
ISU mounted another rally in the top of the sixth as Maddie Reese took advantage of a drawn in infield to hit a triple over everyone to right. However, Nychole Antillon (groundout) and Jorden Spendlove (flyout) could not cash in on the chance and the Aggies were out of another jam.
Outstanding in the Circle
Though the offense could not deliver, Katie Johnson put forth an outstanding performance in the circle. The Cyclone hurler pitched all six innings in defeat, allowing just three hits and the one unearned run. Johnson did not allow any walks while getting two strikeouts.
