AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State softball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader to Miami University Sunday afternoon at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The RedHawks took down ISU 9-4 in the first game, before holding on to win 5-3 in game two. Iowa State falls to 18-11 on the year, while Miami improved to 15-10 on the year.
Game One: Miami 9 Iowa State 4
Miami took advantage of a wild Brianna Wilbacher, jumping out to a 3-0 lead before the Cyclones were able to get an out, as the RedHawks went walk, single, hit by pitch, bases loaded walk and 2-RBI single to lead off the game. After a third walk and just one out, ISU brought in Stacy Roggentien to slow things down, but Remy Edwards got a 2-RBI double off her to get ahead 5-0.
Iowa State took advantage of some free baserunners in the in the bottom of the second as Aly Cappaert and Nychole Antillon drew walks. Two batters later, Jorden Spendlove drove them home on a 2-RBI double to left-center. She was then brought home two batters later on an RBI-single by Sammie Hildreth to make it 5-3 RedHawks.
With the score 6-3 in the top of the fifth, Iowa State got a big break as the RedHawks left the bases loaded and the Cyclones were able to run MU pitcher Amber Logemann out of the game. The RedHawks brought in Megan Mattera and ISU was able to get the bases loaded with two outs. However, Spendlove couldn't bring home the runs this time around, grounding out to third to end ISU's last serious threat of the game.
Game Two: Miami 5 Iowa State 3
The RedHawks were first on the board again in the second inning, taking advantage of free bases again as Miami loaded the bases with one out, all three runners reaching on walks drawn off Katie Johnson. Tiyona Marshall and brought home the first run on an RBI-single and then Eryn McCarver drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 2-0 RedHawks.
It was not until the bottom of the third when ISU got their response. Singles by Hope Scheffert and Brittany Gomez set the stage for Cathlin Bingham, who got an RBI-single through the middle to cut the MU lead in half. Lexi Slater followed that with a sacrifice fly, enough to bring home Gomez and to tie things up.
Miami added runs in the fourth (an RBI-single from Taylor Shuey) and the fifth (RBI-single by Kat Lee) to get back ahead 4-2. Iowa State went to work in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases with two outs via a Cappaert walk, a Kelsey McFarland fielder's choice and a Spendlove walk. Scheffert was able to cut the lead down a run with an RBI-single to center, but that would be all for ISU as Hildreth fouled out to third to end the threat.
