LAS VEGAS – A seventh-inning grand slam by Cheyenne Cordes propelled No. 14 Cal to a 6-2 victory over Iowa State Friday morning at Eller Media Stadium. The loss dropped ISU to 11-5, while the Golden Bears improved to 18-1.
The Cyclones got ahead 2-0 in the first inning, but could not hold onto the lead as Cal slowly chipped away before the seventh-inning breakthrough to get ahead for the first time.
First on the Board
After a perfect top half of the first from Katie Johnson, the Cyclone offense got immediately to work. Brittany Gomez led off with a bunt single, and Aly Cappaert fired a double off the wall in center to give the Cyclones second and third with no outs.
Maddie Reese brought home her team-high 13th RBI of the season as ISU ran a squeeze play to allow Gomez to come home safely and make it 1-0 Cyclones. Rachel Hartman came up to make it 2-0 as her fly ball to center was deep enough to bring Cappaert in to score.
Cal Responds
The Golden Bears did not waste time getting on the board in the second inning as Danielle Henderson took a Johnson offering just over the left field wall for a solo home run to cut the ISU lead in half at 2-1.
ISU Gets Out of Jam
Cal finally got some runners on base in the top of the four as Cheyenne Cordes drew a walk, Kobie Pettis got hit by a pitch and Breana Kostreba got a base hit to right to load the bases with one out.
However, ISU's defense got the big play as Alleah Laxamana chopped one back to the circle. Johnson fired home to Sammie Hildreth for the second out, who then fired to Jorden Spendlove at first to turn the double play and get ISU out of the jam.
Bears Equalize
Cal tied the game back up in the top of the fifth. After allowing a lead-off double to Vanessa Alvarez and a single to Jazmyn Jackson, Katie Johnson's day was done and Stacy Roggentien checked in. During Roggentien's first at-bat, a wild pitch brought home Alvarez to tie things up at 2-2.
After that, Roggentien buckled down, getting three of the next four hitters to get out of the jam. Roggentien was strong again in the top of the sixth, retiring the Bears in order to get up to five consecutive batters retired.
Cal Gets Ahead
Roggentien got in trouble early in the seventh as she walked Alvarez and gave up a single to Jackson. After Kylie Reed bunted over the runners to get them to second and third with one out.
The Cyclones brought in Katie Johnson to try and get the next two outs, but it proved troublesome. Vonk grounded one to second, but ISU could not get anyone out as they held the runners. It ended up not mattering as Cordes took Johnson out to deep center for a grand slam to get the Bears ahead for good at 6-2.
