MALIBU, Calif. - The Iowa State soccer team (3-1-0) toppled No. 10 Pepperdine (3-1-0) 1-0 at Tari Frahm Rokus Field in Malibu, California. The win goes down as the Cyclones best victory of all-time and the first against a top-10 team.
Turning Point of the Game
In the 50th minute, freshman Taylor Wagner put in a fantastic corner kick that found senior Haley Albert's head. Albert who has two goals on the year put the ball right at the back post where freshman Klasey Medelberg was in perfect position to put the ball in the back of the net. The Cyclones played extremely well and defended the Waves strong attack.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes to...
Haley Albert. The senior has really stepped up as a leader for a younger team that features three freshmen in the starting lineup. The midfielder is tied for the league lead in goals and this afternoon she used her 6-1 height to get up after yet another corner kick. This time Klasey Medelberg attacked the back post and buried the ball into the open net. Albert tied for the most shots for the Cyclones in the upset this afternoon with two. She just missed an opportunity for another goal when she put a header hard off the bar.
Coach Said It
"We wanted to come out strong and we achieved that today,” head coach Tony Minatta said. “We came out and tested them and it was really a back-and-forth game through the first half. In the second half we were able to get down and get some set pieces. We capitalized on a set piece. They started pushing the pace and we were defending a lot, but at the same time we had the lead and we held strong. We were able to manage their pressure and came out with a win. Hats off to the team. I'm very proud of everyone on the team and all the effort that was put in. I am looking forward to building off of this and getting ready for our next game against Colorado College.”
