TEMPE, Ariz.. –The No. 14 Iowa State wrestling team (7-3, 1-0 Big 12) fell to Arizona State (7-6, 0-1 Pac 12) by a score of 23-18 on Friday night.
The Cyclones won four matches on the evening, including three bonus point victories from Tanner Weatherman, Lelund Weatherspoon and Earl Hall, but it was not enough to hold off the Sun Devils.
Iowa State vs. Arizona State
Tanner Weatherman took a 4-1 lead on an early takedown, followed up by a two-point nearfall to end the first period in commanding fashion in his 165-pound bout. However, Arizona State's Jacen Petersen responded, as the Sun Devil sophomore got an escape and a takedown of his own to start the second and knot things up at 4-4. Following a Weatherman escape, the senior showed why he's ranked No. 11 nationally. He took Petersen to his back and recorded the fall in 4:27 to give the Cyclones a 6-4 lead in the dual.
At 174 pounds, Lelund Weatherspoon dominated his matchup with ASU's Preston McCalmon to come away with an 11-3 major decision. While Weatherspoon was on his offense to build the lead, it was his ability to ride McCalmon late in the match the proved crucial to preserving the major decision. The junior built over two minutes of riding time, including the crucial final 27 seconds to secure the bonus point victory.
Following back-to-back Arizona State bonus point wins, Kyle Larson took the mat with the Cyclones trailing 17-10. Larson got Iowa State back in the win column with a commanding 6-2 victory over Arizona State freshman Mikel Perales.
It was all Earl Hall in his 133-pound bout with ASU's Tyree Owens. Hall dominated from start to finish en route to a 20-4 tech. fall. He started things out with a takedown, followed by a four-point nearfall early in the second period and continued to roll from there. With Owens exhausted, Hall scored two late takedowns to secure the tech. fall to put Iowa State back in the lead, 18-17.
The Cyclones would fall in heart-breakers in the final two matches, as Arizona State would go on to win the dual, 23-18.
