DAVIS, Calif. – The Iowa State softball team (10-4 overall) closed out the 2016 Aggie Invitational with a 6-0 win over New Mexico (6-6) on Saturday. The Cyclones went 3-1 at the tournament, winning their final three games in Davis.
Freshman pitcher Emma Hylen was phenomenal, giving up no runs on just three hits in six innings of work to collect her second win of the weekend. She combined with relief pitcher Kristine Kimberley for Iowa State's third shutout of the season.
Iowa State 6, New Mexico 0
The Cyclones continued the trend set yesterday of starting fast offensively. After taking the lead in the first inning of both of Friday's wins over South Dakota and Idaho State, ISU put two on the board early vs. New Mexico. Batting lead-off, Brittany Gomez got things started and slapped one down the third base line for a single. The hit put Gomez on a 12-game hitting streak, one short of tying her career-long.
After a Cathlin Bingham walk, Rachel Hartman came to the plate and smacked a 2-RBI double to right center to bring Gomez and Bingham home and give ISU a 2-0 lead. The Cyclones would eventually move Hartman over to third, but were unable to bring her home.
The Lobos mounted a threat in the top of the fourth, with two hits in the inning, but the Cyclone defense turned a tight 3-6-3 double play to help squash the UNM momentum. Hartman fielded a grounder at first, and whipped it to Gomez, who covered second to get the Lobo runner Cheyenne Smith. Gomez's throw back to Hartman at first was just in time to complete the play and conserve the 2-0 ISU lead.
Iowa State's offense came back to life in a big way in the bottom of the fifth. The top of the order, Gomez, Bingham and Cappaert, loaded the bases with no outs for Hartman. The junior then collected her third RBI of the day on a blooper to left field to make it a 3-0 lead.
Nychole Antillon got in on the action with an RBI single of her own to score Bingham. Freshman Kirsten Caudle followed suit and helped the Cyclones tack on two more, as she singled to right to bring pinch runner Katie Dukes home. Niki Turner was then able to score via error on the Lobo right fielder to put Iowa State up 6-0.
Sophomore newcomer Kristine Kimberley entered to pitch the last inning and closed the deal on a ground ball to Sally Woolpert at third base.
