AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State softball team (15-14 overall) defeated Indiana State by a score of 3-2 on Wednesday at the Cyclone Sports Complex behind a solo home run from freshman Sally Woolpert.
The Cyclones and Sycamores were slated to play two games on the day, but the second game was canceled due to rain and lightning in the Ames area.
Game One: Iowa State 3, Indiana State 2
The Sycamores were able to strike first, putting two runs on the board in the top of the first. Lead-off hitter Kelsey Montgomery started things off with a single to left field, followed by a walk for Shaye Barton. After the runners were moved over on a sacrifice bunt, Monique Castillo came to the plate with one out. Castillo laced a double to left to bring both runners home, as Indiana State took a 2-0 lead.
The Cyclones responded right back in the home half of the inning. Brittany Gomez reached on an Indiana State error, followed by walks for Aly Cappaert and Kelsey McFarland to load the bases for Sammie Hildreth. The senior catcher looped an RBI single to left, scoring Gomez from third, and cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Kaylee Bosworth then stepped to the plate and picked up another RBI, reaching on a fielder's choice. Cappaert came in to score, and the bases remained loaded with two outs. Indiana State got out of the inning and the score remained tied at 2-2.
The fast start on offense was not a sign of things to come for either team, as Cyclone starter Savannah Sanders shut down the Sycamore attack over the next three innings. Reliever Emma Hylen entered in the top of the fifth and got the Cyclones out of a jam, and then followed Sanders' lead, handcuffing the Indiana State offense.
The game remained tied entering the bottom of the fourth, with freshman Sally Woolpert leading off for the Cyclones. With a 1-1 count, the ISU third baseman launched her second home run of the season over the fence in left field to give Iowa State a 3-2 lead.
Hylen and the Iowa State defense did the rest, as she went three innings, giving up no runs and no hits to slam the door shut and pick up her third save of the season. The win moved Sanders' record on the season to 6-8, as the freshman gave up two runs on just three hits, to go with three strikeouts.
