OMAHA, Neb. - The Iowa State softball team (15-23, 0-6 Big 12) fell in a heartbreaker to Creighton (24-12, 6-1 Big East) by a score of 1-0 on a walk-off Bluejay RBI bunt in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Creighton 1, Iowa State 0
It was a true pitcher's battle at the Creighton Sports Complex, as Cyclone freshman starter Savannah Sanders was completely dominant through the game's first six innings. Creighton also got an excellent outing from its starting pitcher Micaela Whitney.
Sanders and the Iowa State defense locked down the dangerous Bluejay offensive attack throughout much of the game. The freshman held Creighton hitless through three innings and struck out eight batters, while surrendering just three walks. Only one CU player advanced beyond first base in the first six frames. The performance was highlighted by a three-strikeout sixth inning to keep the game scoreless.
Iowa State, meanwhile, also struggled to generate offense in their opportunities. The Cyclones generated four hits on the day, with two coming courtesy of Big 12 hits leader Brittany Gomez. However, ISU was unable to string multiple hits together in an inning. Whitney went all seven innings in the circle for Creighton, giving up four hits and four walks while striking out four batters.
The bottom of the seventh inning was Iowa State's undoing, as the Bluejays mounted their first offense of the day. Following a walk, Katie Pascuzzi entered to pinch run for CU. She was moved over to second on the first Creighton hit of the day, courtesy of Jen Daro. Mileah McKelvy then put down a punt which snuck through Iowa State's drawn in defense, allowing Pascuzzi to come home for the walk-off run.
