LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Iowa State softball team (20-35, 1-17 Big 12) closed out the 2016 season at Kansas (31-20, 8-9 Big 12), falling to the Jayhawks in a doubleheader on Saturday at Arrocha Ballpark.
Game One: Kansas 11, Iowa State 1
The second inning was Iowa State's undoing in the first game of the day, as Kansas drew four walks and a hit by pitch before their first base hit of the frame. The Jayhawks manufactured two runs on an RBI by Briana Evans, followed by a bases loaded walk for Chaley Brickey.
Daniella Chavez then stepped to the plate and cleared the bases with a three-RBI double to right, putting the Cyclones in a 5-0 deficit. Kristine Kimberley entered in relief of ISU starter Brianna Weilbacher to get out of the inning with no further damage done.
The Cyclones got on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Cathlin Bingham and Aly Cappaert led off the inning with back-to-back base hits, followed by a walk for Kelsey McFarland to load the bases with no outs. Nychole Antillon registered an RBI on a fielder's choice to score Bingham from third. However, ISU was unable to capitalize further and ended the frame trailing 5-1.
The Jayhawks came back with a big performance in the home half of the fourth, putting six runs on the board, extending the lead to 11-1. The Cyclones were unable to respond and would fall by that score in five innings.
Game Two: Kansas 8, Iowa State 0
KU's Daniella Chavez collected her fifth and sixth RBIs of the game in the opening frame of game two. Following a pair of Jayhawk walks issued by ISU starter Savannah Sanders, Chavez smacked a two-RBI double off the right field fence, giving Kansas a 2-0 lead to start the game.
Iowa State mounted a threat in the top of the third inning, as the senior duo of Sammie Hildreth and Brittany Gomez collected back-to-back hits to put runners on first and second. They accounted for the first ISU base hits of the day, but were left stranded as KU pitcher Monique Wesley kept the shutout alive.
The Jayhawks once again exploded in the bottom of the fourth, putting six runs on the board on four hits and an ISU fielding error. The 8-0 Kansas lead gave the Cyclones a chance to respond and extend the game in the top of the fifth, but they were unable to bring around any runs.
