Cyclones Fall At No. 7 West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The Iowa State soccer team (2-11-2, 0-4-1 Big 12) fell 4-0 at No. 7 West Virginia (11-3, 4-1 Big 12) on Friday night at Dick Dlesk Stadium.

The Cyclones trailed just 1-0 in a tightly-contested first half on a WVU goal in the 7^th minute. However, the Mountaineers put on an offensive flurry in the second stanza, and Iowa State was unable to answer.

Turning Point of the Match
The Cyclones battled WVU neck-and-neck in the first half after surrendering the early goal, and nearly earned an opportunity to tie the match on a would-be penalty kick that went uncalled when Merin Mundt was taken down in the box. The match really turned in West Virginia's favor early in the second half, on a goal by Michaela Abam in the 49^th minute. Grace Cutler put in a cross that skipped through a scrum of players in front of goal, eventually finding Abam's feet at the far post, and the senior put the chance away.

The Mountaineers tacked on two more goals later in the match from Heather Kaleiohi (65') and Lauren Segalla (72').

Coach Speak
"Going into halftime 1-0 was an opportunity for us to come out and do something," head coach Tony Minatta said. "We gave up another early goal. It was one of those days where we ran into a team that is pretty good and we didn't respond. We have to re-group because we have two games at home coming up that we need to put it all out there. We still control our destiny and are in a position to do what we need to do, so we need to take care of business Thursday night."
