BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Iowa State (7-7) dropped its final game at the Samford/UAB Tournament to Murray State (11-3), 11-4, on Sunday at Samford Stadium. Junior Kelsey McFarland collected three hits, including a double, and scored two runs, but it was not enough as the Racers were powered by three home runs on the day.
Murray State 11, Iowa State 4
Iowa State fell in an early 1-0 hole, as the Racers put a run on the scoreboard in their first opportunity of the game. Murray State collected two hits and a walk in the top of the first, including an RBI single to right by Jocelynn Rodgers to score Kaylee Ranburger.
The Cyclones put together a promising opportunity in the home half of the first, with back-to-back two-out base hits from Rachel Hartman and Kelsey McFarland, followed by a walk for Sally Woolpert to load the bases. However, they were thwarted on a nice defensive play by the MSU second baseman to end the threat.
The Racers added another run in the top of the third before it was Iowa State's turn to get on the board. A double for Rachel Hartman, her second of the season, got things going for Cyclones. McFarland followed Hartman's lead with a base hit, and another walk for Woolpert loaded the bases once again. Later in the inning, Kaylee Bosworth reached on a fielder's choice, scoring McFarland from third. A Murray State throwing error also allowed pinch runner Niki Turner to come home, tying the game at 2-2.
The Racers responded in the ensuing inning, as a walk and a base hit led to a three-run home run to center field for Taylor Odom. The shot was against Savannah Sanders, who entered in relief earlier in the inning for the Cyclones.
Iowa State rallied for two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, started by McFarland's third hit of the day on a double down the left field line. The junior later scored on an RBI single up the middle by Sami Williams, who advanced all the way to third on a Murray State error. Williams would later score on another Racer miscue, cutting the MSU lead to 5-4.
Murray State responded with a pair of runs in the sixth inning and four in the seventh to take an 11-4 advantage. The Racers then closed the door on ISU's rally attempts, keeping the Cyclones winless on the weekend.
