AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (4-13-2, 2-6-1 Big 12) took down Kansas State (4-12-2, 0-9-0 Big 12), 1-0, on senior night to secure a bid to the 2018 Big 12 Soccer Championship. ISU needed a win on Sunday night and a TCU win over Oklahoma State to advance to the postseason, and the Cyclones got both, punching their ticket to the conference tournament at Swope Soccer Village.
Emily Steil, one of seven seniors playing the final home match of their careers, notched the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute to push Iowa State to victory.
Turning Point of the Game
The Cyclones had a number of dangerous chances on Thursday night, logging 14 shots with seven on target, but it was Steil's dagger that secured the win and sent Iowa State to Kansas City. Freshman Taylor Bee sent a ball forward toward the 18-yard box from midfield, when a K-State defender who looked primed to intercept the pass, misplayed it. A streaking Steil calmly collected the carom and beat K-State's goalkeeper one-on-one to bury her chance in the back of the net.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes To…
Emily Steil. The senior has been lights-out for Iowa State all season. She's Iowa State's leader in points (11) and assists (5) and notched her third goal of 2018 on Thursday night in her final match at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
Coach Speak
"I couldn't be prouder of the team," said head coach Tony Minatta. "I thought we started kind of played tentative, but we were able to overcome that and adjust. We were able to put one away and get the win. Emily got the ball and made a great play on it. A senior, team captain and leader, who led the team in assists and is top-10 all-time in assists to get the game-winner was a special moment. I'm really proud of her."
