AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (2-11-2, 0-3-1 Big 12) fell 2-1 to No. 24 Baylor (11-4, 4-1 Big 12) in double overtime on Sunday afternoon at the Cyclone Sports Complex. Courtney Powell scored her team-leading third goal of the season to give Iowa State a lead early in the second half, but the Bears rallied and won the match on a golden goal by Taylor Moon in the 104th minute.
Turning Point of the Game
Disaster struck for the Cyclones with just over six minutes remaining in the second overtime period. With the rain pouring down at the Cyclone Sports Complex, Moon danced to just beyond the 18-yard box and sent a rocket towards the goal. Her shot found its mark, placed perfectly into the goal's top right corner, as the visiting Bears celebrated a golden goal.
Baylor's other goal came off a Jackie Crowther corner kick in the 69th minute. Crowther sent a perfect ball into the box, finding teammate Giuliana Cunningham, who buried the chance in the back of the net for an equalizer.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes To…
Courtney Powell. The sophomore played one of her best matches of the season on Sunday vs. Baylor. The speedy Powell tallied a team-high four shots and was a hand-full for Baylor's defense on the outside. Her goal in the 48th minute came off a beautiful feed from senior forward Klasey Medelberg. The pass found Powell perfectly in stride as she broke free from the BU back line and into the box. She slotted her shot past the keeper, giving Iowa State the lead.
The assist was Medelberg's second in as many games. She's now tallied three helpers on the season, tied with Hannah Cade for second-most on the team.
Coach Speak
"We kept them at bay for most of the game and just unfortunately gave up that last shot there," head coach Tony Minatta said. "When a team out-shoots you, it depends on the quality of shots they get, and we didn't give up a lot of quality shots today. Even the ending shot was outside 18. It was a great shot. We're getting more comfortable in the 4-4-2. We had some really good opportunities going forward. We need to shoot more. We had opportunities where we had looks at goal that we didn't take shots on."
