AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (2-12-2, 0-5-1 Big 12) fell to No. 18 West Virginia (9-3-3, 5-1-0 Big 12) by a score of 2-0 on Friday night at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The Mountaineers notched goals late in each half and continued to earn their reputation as the stingiest defensive team in the conference.
Turning Point of the Game
West Virginia's first goal was a momentum-killer for the Cyclones, sending WVU into the halftime intermission with a 1-0 lead after 40 solid minutes of soccer from ISU. Stefany Ferrer-vanGinkel found teammate Lizzie Mayfield open at the top of the 18-yard box in the 40th minute. Mayfield danced two steps to her right and ripped a shot on target and into the left corner of the goal, past the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Dayja Schwichtenberg. It was the first goal of the freshman's career.
Mayfield also assisted on WVU's second-half goal, after her shot was stopped by Schwichtenberg. Unfortunately for the Cyclones, the rebound caromed directly to forward Sh'Nia Gordon, who buried the point-black chance in the 79th minute to extend the visitors' lead to 2-0.
Coach Speak
"They're really good," Minatta said. "We got some opportunities going forward, but we weren't clean enough with our technical quality and our passes, or quick enough to take them on the end line, but they're doing that to pretty much everybody. I thought it was a good accounting overall. We tried to press to get a goal down 1-0 and gave up the counter for a goal when we did get forward. We've got to keep working and things will come our way."
On Deck
Iowa State will be traveling next weekend with a road trip through the state of Oklahoma. The Cyclones take on Oklahoma on Friday at 7 p.m. in Norman, followed by a Sunday match at Oklahoma State at 1 p.m.
