AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (2-13-2, 0-6-1 Big 12) dropped a 2-1 decision to Oklahoma (7-7-2, 3-3-1 Big 12) on Friday night at John Crain Field. Sophomore Kassi Ginther gave the Cyclones a 1-0 lead early in the first half, but it was not enough to withstand an OU rally on senior night.
Turning Point of the Game
The Cyclones and Sooners were locked in a 1-1 battle in the second half when Emily Parker notched the game-winning goal in the 53rd minute. Erika Yost slotted a pass through from the top of the box and found Parker in a tight window of space right in front of the goal. There was little Cyclone goalkeeper Dayja Schwichtenberg could do, as Parker capitalized on the chance to give OU a 2-1 lead.
Oklahoma's first goal of the night came courtesy of Marissa McMahand on a penalty kick in the 22nd minute to tie the match at 1-1.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes To…
Kassi Ginther. The sophomore continues to emerge as a bright spot for the Cyclones at the forward position. Cyclone teammate and fellow sophomore Courtney Powell intercepted a Sooner pass at midfield and was off to the races. Powell found a streaking Ginther, who settled the pass beautifully and maneuvered around OU's last line of defense before burying her shot in the back of the net.
Ginther is now tied for the team lead after scoring her third goal of the season in the 14th minute on Friday night. All three goals have come in Big 12 play.
Coach Speak
"I thought we played really well in the first half," said head coach Tony Minatta. "We fought really hard through the whole game. There were a couple unfortunate mishaps out there that you have to work through. You can't give up opportunities just because they happen. The team just keeps fighting and they show a lot of courage and a lot of character because game after game they go out and fight for it. I'm proud of the effort."
