STILLWATER, Okla. – Iowa State (3-13-2, 1-6-1 Big 12) took down Oklahoma State (10-6-1, 2-5-1 Big 12), 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Neal Patterson Stadium. The Cyclones scored their first conference win of the season behind goals from Shea Sullivan (27') and Kassi Ginther (55'), as well as a lock-down defensive performance.
Ginther's goal was her fourth in Big 12 play this season to tie her for the league lead for goals in conference action. Goalkeeper Dayja Schwichtenberg, the Big 12 leader in saves, logged six stops on Sunday for her third shutout of the year.
Turning Point of the Game
Shea Sullivan's first-half goal was not only the first of her career, it was among the greatest highlights of Iowa State's season thus far. A Cyclone corner kick was cleared out of the box by Oklahoma State in the 27th minute, but Sullivan, a sophomore defender, settled the ball, took a touch and unleashed a rocket on goal from 35 yards out.
Her aim was pure, placing the ball beautifully in the upper left corner, beyond the outstretched arms of OSU goalie Hannah Warner.
Iowa State's second goal came via penalty kick in the 55th minute. Senior forward Klasey Medelberg made a brilliant run into the box, maneuvering around Warner before the Cowgirl keeper was called for a foul in the box. Ginther stepped to the mark for the Cyclones and buried the opportunity, extending the ISU lead to 2-0. It was Ginther's team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes To…
Shea Sullivan. The sophomore played all 90 minutes at outside back, scored the game-winning goal and was critical to a tremendous Cyclone defensive effort. Sullivan's goal was the first of her career, and left the OSU contingent at Patterson Stadium stunned en route to a spoiled senior day for the Cowgirls.
Coach Speak
"I'm just really proud of the team," said head coach Tony Minatta. "We've experience so many tough, one-goal losses in conference. To come out and get that goal, weather the storm and be able to get the second goal was huge. All around, it was a whole team effort. I'm just really proud of the character that they've shown to not quit and not give up. We had to take care of business today and we did. Now we have to do the same on Thursday."
