CYCLONE NOTEBOOK
1. The Iowa State Soccer team (2-12-2, 0-5-1 Big 12) is set to enter a critical weekend of Big 12 action with a trip through the state of Oklahoma. First up for the Cyclones is a battle against Oklahoma (6-7-2, 2-3-1 Big 12) in Norman on Friday at 7 p.m. Iowa State then travels to Stillwater to take on Oklahoma State (10-4-1, 2-3-1 Big 12) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
2. With the 2018 regular season winding to a close, both matches this weekend will help determine bids and seeding at the 2018 Big 12 Soccer Championship. Iowa State currently sits at No. 9 in the Big 12 standings, and will need at least one win this weekend over either Oklahoma (No. 7) or Oklahoma State (No. 8) to stay alive for a berth in the conference postseason tournament.
3. The Cyclones will try to rebound after falling 2-0 to No. 18 West Virginia on Friday to close out a string of three-straight ranked opponents at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The previous week ISU suffered back-to-back heart-breaking 2-1 losses on late goals vs. No. 13 Texas and No. 24 Baylor. UT's Kayra Dollas scored a game-winning goal with less than four minutes remaining in regulation on Friday, and Baylor's Taylor Moon notched a golden goal in double overtime on Sunday.
4. Courtney Powell scored her team-leading third goal of the season against Baylor to give the Cyclones a 1-0 lead early in the second half. Powell collected a beautiful pass on the run from forward Klasey Medelberg and slotted her shot past the BU goalkeeper in the 48th minute.
5. Medelberg recorded two assists over the weekend, also connecting with fellow forward Kassi Ginther for a game-tying goal against Texas. Medelberg is tied for second on the team in assists with three, and is second in total points with seven.
6. Due to injuries, as well as the emergence of talented underclassmen, head coach Tony Minatta trotted out his youngest starting lineups of the season against TCU & Kansas. The Cyclone starting XI included six sophomores and a freshman in both matches. 55 percent of Iowa State's minutes this year have been played by underclassmen.
7. Midfielder Emily Steil is enjoying the best year of her career as a senior. The native of San Juan Capistrano, Calif., assisted on both of Iowa State's goals at TCU, making it the second multi-assist match of her career. Her 11 career assists are the most by an active Cyclone since 2013 (Emily Goldstein - 14), and currently place her at T-No. 7 on Iowa State's all-time list.
