AMES, Iowa -- The No. 23 Iowa State wrestling team will ring in the New Year with competition at the Southern Scuffle, presented by Compound Sportswear, Jan 1-2. The tournament is one of the best midseason tests in all of wrestling and includes nine teams ranked in the top-25 and nearly 50 ranked individuals.

-No. 23 Iowa State rings in the New Year with competition at the Southern Scuffle Jan 1-2. In total nine teams ranked in the top-25 will be in attendance including nearly 50 total ranked individuals.
-Representing Iowa State in Chattanooga will be Alex Mackall, Austin Gomez, Ian Parker, Ryan Leisure, Jarrett Degen, Chase Straw, Marcus Coleman, Sam Colbray, Danny Bush, Kaden Sauer and Gannon Gremmel.
-The Cyclones will also have Todd Small, Joel Shapiro and Francis Duggan competing unattached.
-David Carr and Willie Miklus were set to compete, but are being held out due to illness.
-ISU entered the NWCA/USA Today National Coaches' Poll at No. 23 for the first time since Nov. 1, 2016. This week the Cyclones are ranked No. 23 as well.
-Individually, Iowa State has six wrestlers ranked across the board. Austin Gomez (10, 10, 10, 10), Ian Parker (19, 19, 12, 16), Jarrett Degen (8, 8, 8, 7), Marcus Coleman (NR, NR, NR, 23), Sam Colbray (18, 15, 17, 16) and Willie Miklus (6, 5, 6, 5) all begin the season in the national InterMat, FloWrestling, OpenMat and Trackwrestling rankings.
-The Cyclones ended 2018 on a high note with a dominant 33-6 victory over Ohio.
-Iowa State took No. 3 Iowa down to the wire, falling to the Hawks 19-18. The two teams split in matches won in the dual, 5-5, but a major decision at 125 pounds proved to be the deciding factor late in the dual.
