LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Iowa State (5-4) went 2-0 on Saturday at the Marucci Desert Classic, rallying to defeat BYU (4-6), 5-3, before taking down Nevada (3-5) late by a score of 6-5.
Kaylee Bosworth hit a home run in each game to spur the Cyclone offense, including a two-run shot in the top of the seventh inning that proved to be the difference vs. BYU. Junior pitcher Savannah Sanders picked up both wins on the day, both coming in relief work.
Iowa State 5, BYU 3
Iowa State's first game of the day at UNLV's Eller Media Stadium was a thriller, with late-game heroics provided by Bosworth. With the Cyclones trailing BYU 3-2, and down to their final out, Bosworth launched a two-run moon shot that left the stadium, clearing the scoreboard beyond left field. It was the first home run of the season for the native of Manvel, Texas, and it could not have come at a better time, lifting Iowa State past the Cougars.
The Cyclones drew first blood in the contest, putting two runs on the board in the top of the fourth. Taylor Nearad got ISU's offense jump-started with the first base hit of the day on a stand-up double to center field. Sami Williams followed suit with an RBI single to center, as Nearad raced home from second. Williams would later score on a BYU wild pitch to extend the lead to 2-0.
BYU responded with a two-RBI single down the right field line by Lexi Tarrow in the home half of the inning. The Cougars then took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning on a bases-loaded infield single by Emilee Erickson to score Bridget Fleener.
Junior pitcher Savannah Sanders entered in relief of ISU starter Brianna Weilbacher following the fifth inning. Weilbacher logged 5.0 innings, giving up three runs on five hits while striking out four Cougar batters. Sanders was excellent in relief, allowing just one hit and no runs to seal the deal and pick up her first win of the season.
Bosworth took hold of the opportunity in the top of the seventh with her bomb, and Iowa State tacked on an insurance run to extend the lead to 5-3. Hannah Carter smacked a single to right field, which was then bobbled by the Cougar defender, allowing Kaila Konz to slide home safe on a play at the plate. Sanders and the ISU defense slammed the door shut in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win.
Iowa State 6, Nevada 5
Iowa State was on the board first once again, putting four runs on the board in the bottom of third inning. Sydney Stites singled through the left side, and Bosworth once again stepped to the plate and launched a two-run shot to left, putting the Cyclones ahead 2-0.
The offense was not done, as Talyn Lewis reached on a Nevada error, stole second and would later come in to score via a Kaila Konz RBI. Hannah Carter then picked up an RBI single to center, scoring Bryn Hanrahan.
The Wolfpack responded in the top of the fourth with a pinch hit grand slam off the bat of Nevada freshman Jessica Sellers, tying the contest at 4-4.
Iowa State re-took the lead at 5-4 on an RBI double to left field by Lewis, as Williams rounded third and scored. Nevada once again responded, tying the game at 5-5 in the top of the fifth. Iowa State changed pitchers, as Sanders entered to relieve starter Emma Hylen midway through the frame, and got out of a bases-loaded jam.
Sanders would throw 3.0 innings, giving up no runs on just two hits, and allowing the offense an opportunity to win it in the end. Williams started the bottom of the sixth with a double to right field, and Stites came up with the hit of the game, an RBI single through the right side, allowing Williams to score her second run of the contest, the game-winner.
