GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Iowa State softball team (8-7) battled No. 2 Florida (15-1) on Sunday at KSP Stadium, but came up short in a 3-0 loss. Junior pitcher Emma Hylen held the explosive Gator attack to three runs on five hits and had two strikeouts in 6.0 innings, and was backed by a strong defensive effort.
Iowa State out-hit Florida 6-5 on the day, and was led by Taylor Nearad and Jackie Chairez. The duo both went 2-of-3 at the plate and were bright spots for the Cyclone offense. Nearad notched her team-leading fifth double of the season.
The defeat marked the end of the Aquafina Classic for Iowa State, which went 2-3 overall at the tournament.
Florida 3, Iowa State 0
The Gators came out of the gates fast, putting a run on the board in the bottom of the first inning, scoring first on an RBI double to left field by Amanda Lorenz. UF extended its lead to 3-0 in the home half of the third on a Jordan Matthews RBI double, followed by a base hit for Jannel Wheaton, scoring another run.
Hylen settled into a groove from that point forward, hanging zero's on the board in the Gators' last three innings, allowing just one hit after the third frame. As Hylen and Iowa State's defense started putting the UF batters down in order, the Cyclone bats livened up.
The Cyclones went through the first three innings without a hit, but mounted multiple threats, putting runners in scoring position in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Iowa State's best chance came in the top of the fifth, as Chairez came to the plate with Skyler Ramos on second, pinch running for Kaylee Bosworth with two outs.
Chairez laced a base hit up the middle, and the speedy Ramos rounded third and looked to get Iowa State on the board. However, UF center fielder Alex Voss threw a dime to the plate, as Ramos was called out on the play, keeping ISU scoreless.
Iowa State put two runners on in both the sixth and seventh innings, bringing the tying run to the plate, but never managed put a run on the board against Florida pitcher Aleshia Ocasio.
