HOUSTON – Brianna Weilbacher pitched a seven-inning gem on Saturday night to lead Iowa State (12-12) to a 4-1 victory over Houston (13-7). The Cyclones went 1-1 on the day at the Houston Hilton Plaza Classic, falling 1-0 to Lipscomb (12-5) in game one.
Lipscomb 1, Iowa State 0
The Cyclones came up on the short end of a pitcher's dual in their first game of the day. Savannah Sanders and Emma Hylen were excellent in the circle, but the ISU offense was unable to find its way against Lipscomb ace Mandy Jordan.
The Lady Bison scored their lone run of the game in the top of the first, capitalizing on an Iowa State error. Caitlin Turner, who was hit by pitch to lead off the inning and was moved over to second, scored on a mishandled to pop-fly with two outs, representing the only run of the game.
Iowa State's best offensive opportunities came with runners in scoring position in the fourth and fifth innings. Sally Woolpert crushed a two-out double deep to left field in the fourth, but was left stranded. In the ensuing inning, Taylor Nearad laced a lead-off single through the right side, and stole second, but Jordan worked out of trouble with a strikeout.
Sanders went 3.0 innings, giving up one run (unearned) on no hits and one strikeout. Hylen entered with no outs and a runner on in the top of the fourth and was equally successful, giving up no runs on two hits with four strikeouts in 4.0 innings of action.
Iowa State 4, Houston 1
Houston was on the board first in the home half of the opening inning, as Sarah Barker connected on a two-out RBI single to left center, scoring Sarah Queen to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
Cyclone starter Brianna Weilbacher was nearly flawless from that point forward, allowing just one hit in the final six innings of the game. The senior hurler from Columbia, Ill., totaled 7.0 innings, giving up one run on two hits, to go with six strikeouts, sending Cougar batters back to the dugout in order all night.
Iowa State found an answer on offense in the top of the third inning. Sami Williams reached base on a fielder's choice and took second on a UH throwing error. Woolpert then stayed hot, tying the game with an RBI single down the right field line.
The Cyclones broke the game open in the top of the fourth. Nychole Antillon and Hannah Carter opened the frame with back-to-back base hits, before Kaila Konz reached on a fielder's choice. Williams then ripped an RBI single up the middle, scoring Carter.
Heads-up base-running on the play by the Cyclones forced a throw by the UH first baseman, and the errant throw ended up in the outfield, allowing Konz and Williams to both score, giving Iowa State a 4-1 lead it would not relinquish.
Weilbacher and the ISU defense slammed the door shut, including two swinging strikeouts in the final inning, as the senior pitcher improved to 6-2 on the season.
