BOULDER, Colo. – A slow start and an offensive flurry from Colorado (4-0-1) undid Iowa State (1-4-1) in their bid for a road win at CU's Prentup Field on Sunday afternoon. The Buffs scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of the match, and while the Iowa State side was much-improved in the second half, the deficit would prove too much to overcome.
Turning Point of the Game
Colorado was able to put Iowa State in an early hole, something no other Cyclone opponent has done yet this season. CU's second goal, a 9th minute shot on the ground into the left corner of the goal by Jorian Baucom, was particularly damaging, forcing Iowa State to face its first multi-goal deficit of the season. The Cyclones responded to the early CU flurry and held their own, evening the shot count out to just a 10-8 CU advantage in the second half, but were never able to climb out out from under the early deficit.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes to...
Klasey Medelberg. The senior forward notched her first goal of the season on her 22nd birthday, burying the ball in the back of the net to put Iowa State on the board. Medelberg received a nice pass inside the box from fellow senior Emily Steil and put it out of reach of the Colorado goalkeeper in the 89th minute. Medelberg's goal marked the first allowed by Colorado this season.
Coach Speak
"We have to start strong, and we haven't done that in any game that we've played up to this point, except vs. South Dakota State," head coach Tony Minatta said. "In the second half, we moved the ball and we were getting into the attack. We found Courtney Powell out wide and had good crosses in. The effort was there. You can't spot a good team like CU two goals. If we had played the full 90 minutes like the second half, we're looking at a different game. We have the tools to do some things this season, so we have to keep building off that quality play."
