WACO, Texas – Iowa State (3-14, 0-8 Big 12) fell 2-0 to Baylor (8-6-3, 4-4 Big 12) on Sunday afternoon at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field.
How It Happened…
The Cyclones held a dangerous Baylor offensive attack at bay through the early going behind a strong performance from freshman goalkeeper Georgia Wimmer. However, an unfortunate sequence of events in the 31st minute changed the tenor of the match.
BU's Marissa Gray fired a shot from beyond the top of the box. The shot flew wide of the goal's left post and into the side netting for what should have been an Iowa State goal kick. However, a hole in the side netting allowed the ball to squeeze through and into the goal. It was ruled a goal on the pitch, and with no official replay reviews available in college soccer, the ruling had to stand as called, handing Baylor a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Bears tacked on an additional goal via Raegan Padgett in the 45th minute, and a scoreless second half would lead to a 2-0 BU victory.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes To…
Georgia Wimmer. The freshman tied a career-high by corralling eight saves on the afternoon, including some highlight-tape stops in the first half. Wimmer kept the Cyclones in the game in the early going and, in reality, only allowed one goal to find the back of the net on the day.
