AMES, Iowa – No. 11 Iowa State (1-1, 0-0 Big 12) fell to No. 2 Iowa (1-0, 0-0 Big 10) in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Dual, 29-6. There were 11,238 wrestling fans in Hilton Coliseum on Sunday afternoon, marking the 10th largest crowd in ISU history and the largest since 1999.
How It Happened
Iowa jumped out to an early 9-0 lead after the 125 and 133-pound matches. That's when No. 12 Ian Parker toed the line with Iowa's Carter Happel. After a scoreless first period, Parker opened the second with an escape, but was quickly brought back down by Happel. Parker finished the period on his feet and they were tied 2-2 after two periods.
In the third, Happel opened the period with an escape. Trailing 3-2, Parker secured a takedown to take a 4-3 lead with under one minute to go. Happel was able to tie the match at 4-4 with an escape and they headed to sudden victory. In overtime period, Parker notched the winning takedown, putting the Cyclones on the board with a 6-4 decision over Happel.
At 149 pounds, No. 4 Jarrett Deggen dropped a controversial match to No. 6 Pat Lugo. The final scramble sequence between Degen and Lugo was reviewed two separate times, but ultimately a locked hands call on Degen, which was also reviewed, proved to be the deciding factor in the match.
With Iowa State trailing 12-3 in the dual, No. 19 David Carr came to the mat to face No. 2 Kaleb Young.
In what was the most anticipated match of the day, the two 157-pounders were tied at 0-0 after one period of action. Carr began the second period with an escape to take a 1-0 lead. Young was dinged for stalling also in the second period.
Young began the third stanza with an escape to tie the match at 1-1. With just over 30 seconds remaining in the match, Carr pieced together a leg attack that led to Young's second stall warning, a Carr takedown and Carr cradling Young. Carr turned Young for two back points and secured a 6-1 decision over the All-American.
At the intermission, the Cyclones trailed the Hawkeyes, 12-6. In the second half of the dual, it was all Iowa. The Hawks won the remaining five bouts, two by major decision, to extend their winning streak over the Cyclones.
