Cyclones Falls Late To Appalachian State, 2-1

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Iowa State softball team (5-6) fell 2-1 to Appalachian State (6-3) on Saturday at the Holy City Showdown. The Cyclones got a solo home run from senior Sally Woolpert and an excellent outing from freshman pitcher Shannon Mortimer, but were unable to overcome a two-run Mountaineer home run in the top of the seventh inning.

The Cyclones' offensive woes continued in ISU's third game at Patriots Point Athletics Complex this weekend, with Iowa State plating just one run on six hits. However, the pitching and defense shined, as Mortimer had the best outing of her young collegiate career.
Facing an explosive Mountaineer offense, Mortimer went all 7.0 innings while giving up just two runs on three hits with a career-high six strikeouts.
Iowa State's chances were few and far between in the early going. Kirsten Caudle led-off the bottom of the third inning with a triple to center field. However, the senior was called out on a play at the plate, erasing the first scoring threat of the game. The Cyclones would leave two runners stranded in the inning, as they struggled to come up with timely hits.
Appalachian State struck first with a two-run home run to left center off the bat of Alison Durrence in the top of the seventh inning.
The Cyclones refused to go away quietly, as Woolpert crushed a solo bomb of her own to left center, cutting the deficit to 2-1. It was the senior's first home run of the season, but it would not be enough to spark a rally, as Iowa State fell to the Mountaineers, 2-1.

The Holy City Showdown concludes on Sunday. Iowa State's final game in Charleston will be against Dartmouth at 8 a.m. CT.
