TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Iowa State (1-3) dropped two on Saturday at the JoAnne Graf Classic, falling 5-0 to No. 1 Florida State (4-0), followed by a 3-2 loss to UNC Wilmington (2-2). Senior catcher Kaylee Bosworth smashed a two-run home run against the Seahawks, her first of the year.
No. 1 Florida State 5, Iowa State 0
The Cyclones faced Seminole ace Meghan King for the second time in as many days, and struggled to get the offense on track throughout game one of the day. King stymied the Iowa State bats, holding the Cardinal and Gold to two hits in seven innings of action.
Freshman hurler Shannon Mortimer made the first start of her collegiate career against the defending national champions, and battled the Seminoles well throughout the afternoon.
FSU was able to strike first, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single through the right side by Sydney Sherrill. Sherrill knocked in another run in the third with a chopper over the left side of the infield to extend the Florida State lead to 2-0.
The Seminoles picked up another run on an RBI base hit from Cassidy Davis in the fourth, and notched two in the fifth, including a double down the left field line by Dani Morgan.
Taylor Nearad logged a base hit in the top of the fifth, and Sydney Stites ripped a double to right center in the sixth, but the offense was unable to break through. Mortimer pitched all 6.0 innings, ringing up four strikeouts in her Cyclone debut.
UNC Wilmington 3, Iowa State 2
Senior catcher Kaylee Bosworth got the Cyclones started off on the right foot in game two. Following a walk for Kelsey McFarland, Bosworth stepped to the plate and launched a two-run bomb over the fence in left field. The shot was Bosworth's first of the season, and gave Iowa State an early 2-0 lead.
After a scoreless second inning, the Seahawks responded in the top of the third. UNCW's Janel Gamache notched a three-RBI triple to right center with two outs, giving UNCW its first lead of the day.
Starting pitcher Emma Hylen and the Cyclone defense locked in from that point forward, holding the Seahawks in check over the final four innings. However, the offense struggled to get things rolling against UNCW's Rylee Pate.
Iowa State's best chance came in the bottom of the second, when Cyclones loaded the bases with base hits by Sally Woolpert and Logan Schaben, followed by a walk for Kirsten Caudle. However, Pate worked out of trouble with a grounder down the third base line to end the Cyclone threat and the game.
