FULLERTON, Calif. – Iowa State (16-9) went 2-0 on Saturday at the Easton Invitational, defeating Boston (11-14), 1-0, before a 7-5 victory over Harvard (6-6). The Cyclones have now won seven-straight, the program's longest winning streak since the 2010 season.
Emma Hylen was phenomenal, picking up a complete game, one-hit shutout against Boston. She also collected her school-record breaking eighth career save vs. Harvard, pitching the final inning to slam the door shut on the Crimson.
Senior catcher Kaylee Bosworth had a vibrant performance in game two, going 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBI's vs. Harvard.
Iowa State 1, Boston 0
Hylen was simply outstanding in the first game of the day, putting together a complete game shutout of the Boston Terriers. The senior surrendered just one hit in the outing and struck out four as she improved to 8-3 on the year.
Every bit of the Roseville, Minn., native's dominance was needed, as the Cyclones struggled to generate offense against Boston's Emily Gant. The Terrier righty held ISU to five hits on the day and notched four strikeouts
The Cyclones finally broke up a 0-0 tie in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Sami Williams got the offense jump-started with a lead-off single to left field. She was then moved over to second on a well-placed sacrifice bunt from Hannah Carter.
With two outs, senior Kaylee Bosworth stepped to the plate and came up clutch. Bosworth roped an RBI base hit to left, scoring Williams. It would be Iowa State's lone run of the game, but with Hylen dealing in the circle, it was all the Cyclones needed.
Iowa State would seal the deal on defense, shutting down Boston's best chance of the day thanks to a beautiful 6-4-3 double play in the top of the sixth.
Iowa State 7, Harvard 5
The Cyclone bats started humming in Iowa State's second game of the day, jumping out to an early lead thanks to a four-run top of the third inning. Kirsten Caudle was ISU's first base-runner, drawing a one-out walk, followed by Williams reaching on a dropped third strike. The duo advanced on a pair of stolen bases.
Junior Hannah Carter then plated the first run of the game with an RBI single through the left side to score Caudle. With runners on the corners, the Cyclones pulled off a double steal, and Williams was called safe on a play at the plate to make it a 2-0 ISU lead.
Bosworth then came to the plate and launched a two-run home run into the berm beyond the fence at Anderson Family Field. Bosworth's first dinger of the day extended Iowa State's advantage to 4-0.
Harvard answered with back-to-back solo home runs, courtesy of Meagan Lantz and Morgan Melito.
However, Bosworth was back at it with her second dinger of the game on a solo bomb to right field, making it the second multi-home run game of her career. Iowa State tacked on an additional run in the top of the sixth on an RBI single through the left side by Sally Woolpert, making it a 6-2 Iowa State lead.
The Crimson rallied once more, plating three runs in the bottom of the sixth, including a two-RBI double from Trina Hoang. However, Kirsten Caudle came up with a clutch RBI single, scoring Talyn Lewis from second base to tack on an insurance run for the Cyclones in the top of the seventh.
Hylen then entered in relief for Iowa State and slammed the door shut to pick up her school-record eighth career save. Sophomore Tatum Ksiazek was credited with the win, as she improved to 3-0 on the season. Ksiazek went 5.0 innings, allowing four runs on five hits with two strikeouts.
