PHOENIX, Ariz. – Iowa State (8-8) went 1-1 Saturday on day two of GCU's Lopes Up Classic, scoring a 7-3 victory over Northern Colorado (4-14) before falling 2-0 to Grand Canyon (10-8) in the night-cap.
Junior Sami Williams notched the 41st double of her career in the win over UNC, tying the program record set by Lexi Slater (2012-15).
Iowa State 7, Northern Colorado 3
The Cyclones came out of the gates fast and put together one of their best offensive performances of the season in game one vs. Northern Colorado. Iowa State piled up 12 hits, its second-best total of the season, and churned out seven runs to outpace the Bears.
Kaylee Bosworth and Kasey Simpson got things going for the Cyclones in the top of the second inning, collecting back-to-back base hits with one out. The duo was then moved over on a sacrifice bunt by Logan Schaben. Hannah Carter got Iowa State on the board by ripping a two-RBI base hit through the right side.
Sami Williams extended the lead with her team-leading third home run of the season in the top of the fifth with a solo shot to right center. Williams' bomb was her second of the weekend and put Iowa State ahead 3-0. Later in the inning, Bosworth laced a two-RBI double down the left field line, plating Sydney Stites and Jackie Chairez.
UNC got on the board in the home half of the sixth with a Dani Young RBI double, but the Cyclone bats stayed hot in the seventh. It was Bosworth once again that connected against Northern Colorado ace Valerie Vidal. The senior collected a two-RBI double to right center, extending the lead to 7-1.
Colorado State scratched out a pair of runs in a last-gasp effort, but Cyclone starter Shannon Mortimer and her defense put the rally attempt to rest. Mortimer pitched all 7.0 innings, giving up just one earned run on six hits with a pair of strikeouts. The freshman improved to 2-0 on the weekend with the win.
Bosworth had perhaps her best game of the season, going 3-of-4 at the plate with three RBI's, two doubles and a run scored.
Grand Canyon 2, Iowa State 0
Game two of the day was a pitchers' duel through-and-through, with Cyclone starter Savannah Sanders and GCU ace Yesenia Morrison battling back and forth.
Sanders also got help from her defense, coming through with a particularly critical sequence in the bottom of the fourth inning to preserve a 0-0 tie. GCU put Shea Smith and Sierra Smith on base, and moved them over to second and third with just one out.
Following a called time to talk things over, Williams tracked a ball from her shortstop position into shallow left field for the second out of the inning. Sanders then induced a fly ball to Kirsten Caudle in right field to get out of trouble.
However, the Lopes were able to break up the scoreless affair in the ensuing inning, courtesy of a lead-off home run by Madelyn Dowdle. Sanders recovered nicely to prevent a big inning, but the Lopes followed it up with yet another solo homer in the home half of the sixth, this time off the bat of Sierra Smith. Those runs were all GCU would need to hold on for a 2-0 win.
Morrison held the Cyclones scoreless throughout, allowing just four hits with two strikeouts on the night.
