SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Iowa State softball team (12-9) went 2-0 on Saturday at the ShareSLO Mustang Classic, picking up a 9-0 run-rule victory over Utah State (8-10) before a 6-3 win against host Cal Poly (4-17).
With the wins, Iowa State improves to 12-9, the program's best start through 21 games since the 2015 season.
Iowa State 9, Utah State 0
The Cyclones put together one of their most complete performances of the season in game one of the day against Utah State. After falling 10-1 to the Aggies on Friday, Iowa State was firing on all cylinders, collecting its second run-rule victory of 2019.
It all started with a phenomenal outing by freshman hurler Shannon Mortimer. In her first start of the weekend, Mortimer collected a complete game shutout, going all 6.0 innings without surrendering a run. The Cyclone newcomer gave up just four hits in the outing and had two strikeouts.
The Iowa State offense broke through in the top of the third inning. Sydney Stites drew a walk and then made a heads-up play on the bases, taking third base when it was left uncovered on an infield single by Logan Schaben. Kirsten Caudle then gave the Cyclones the lead with an RBI single through the left side, scoring Stites.
Junior Sami Williams then stepped to the plate and cleared the bases with a three-run home run over the fence in center field. The shot put Iowa State ahead 4-0, and was Williams' team-leading fourth of the season.
Schaben and Caudle got the offense going once again in the top of the fourth, collecting-to-back RBI base hits after Stites opened the inning with a double to center field. Iowa State scratched out another run on a Utah State error in the fifth to extend the lead to 7-0.
Kaylee Bosworth put the finishing touches on the Cyclone victory by crushing a two-run home run to center field in the top of the sixth to make it 9-0, putting ISU in line for a run-rule victory. Mortimer, with a strong defensive performance behind her, closed the door in the home half of the inning.
The Cyclones turned a season-high three double plays in the win.
Iowa State 6, Cal Poly 3
Cal Poly, fresh off an 8-6 comeback, walk-off victory over Utah State, grabbed the early momentum in Iowa State's final game of the day. The Mustangs went ahead 1-0 in the home half of the second inning on a solo home run off the bat of Hailey Martin.
The Cyclones responded quickly in the top of the third. Taylor Nearad led-off the inning with a double to left center. Schaben then reached on a Cal Poly error and Williams loaded the bases thanks to an intentional walk. With two outs, Woolpert cleared the bases by crushing a three-RBI double off the outfield fence, giving Iowa State a 3-1 lead.
Cal Poly knotted Saturday's contest at 3-3, plating a pair of runs in home half of the fourth inning. Emma Hylen entered in relief midway through the inning for the Cyclones.
Woolpert kept raking in the top of the fifth, notching an RBI double to center field as Hannah Carter raced home from first base. Woolpert's fourth RBI of the game put Iowa State back in front, 4-3. Stites singled to lead-off the sixth inning, stole second and was then brought in to score on an RBI double from Kasey Simpson. Simpson, a freshman, went 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI in the contest.
Iowa State tacked on an insurance run, as Sami Williams led-off the top of the seventh inning with a triple down the right field line. Pinch hitter Mikayla Ramos entered and collected the RBI to score Williams from third.
Hylen picked up the win, her second of the weekend vs. Cal Poly. The senior gave up no runs and just two hits with a strikeout in 3.2 innings of work.
