AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (2-4) scored a 1-0 victory over Omaha (1-4-1) on Sunday afternoon at the Cyclone Sports Complex, propelled by a goal from freshman Mira Emma in the 72nd minute.
Emma's game-winning goal was the first of her career, and the third scored by a Cyclone freshman this season.
Key Moments
The Cyclones looked to be in control throughout Sunday's match, racking up a season-high 26 shots, while holding Omaha to just eight. However, the stingy Maverick back line proved difficult to break down, turning away promising ISU attacks time-and-again.
In the 72nd minute a freshman-to-freshman connection allowed the Cyclones to break through for a much-deserved goal. Midfielder Claudia Najera took the ball nearly to the end line out wide to the left before reversing back to her right and serving a beautifully placed ball into the center of the penalty box. Emma won the header and placed her shot into the left side of the goal beyond the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Kelly Lemke.
The goal brought the Cyclone faithful to its feet and proved to be the game-winner head coach Tony Minatta's squad was looking for.
The defense and ISU goalkeeper Dayja Schwichtenberg did their job to seal the deal. Schwichtenberg recorded her second shutout of the season, and sixth of her career, making three saves on the day.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes to...
Mira Emma. The freshman forward continues to be a spark at the forward position for this young Cyclone squad. Emma tallied two shots and her first goal in what was the third start of her collegiate career. Thus far, freshmen have accounted for three of Iowa State's four goals this season, and all four of its assists. Emma and redshirt freshman Kennady Adams are tied atop the team's points standings with three each.
On Deck
Iowa State is on the road next weekend, starting with a Friday night match at Saint Louis. The Cyclones and Billikens kick-off at 7 p.m. at SLU's Hermann Stadium.
