COLUMBIA, Mo. – Iowa State (18-5) split two games Saturday at the Mizzou Tournament, defeating Kent State (3-9), 11-4, before falling in a 3-2 nail-biter to No. 17 Missouri (18-4).
Iowa State 11, Kent State 4
The Cyclones started the day with a flurry, jumping out to a 4-0 lead after one inning vs. the Golden Flashes. Sami Williams opened the scoring with a RBI double to right center, allowing Carli Spelhaug to race home from first. It was the senior's 71st career double, ranking her 10th on the NCAA DI all-time career doubles list.
Mikayla Ramos followed suit with a RBI double of her own, scoring Williams. Ramos would cross home plate later in the inning as Kent State attempted to throw out Milaysia Ochoa while stealing. Ochoa extended the ISU lead to 4-0 by scoring on a wild pitch.
Kent State scored its first run on a solo home run by Olivia Sborlini in the top of the third.
The offense came alive again in the home half of the inning. Logan Schaben hit a two-run home run to put ISU in front 6-1, followed by a solo homer for junior Emilie Guerra. The shot to left was Guerra's first career home run.
Brenna Brownfield hit another solo home run for Kent State in the fourth.
Williams hit Iowa State's third home run of the game in the bottom of the fourth, a two-run shot that followed a lead-off single by Carli Spelhaug. Ochoa collected a RBI on a ground out that plated Angelica Gonzalez later in the inning, making it a 10-2 lead.
A two-RBI double by Sabrina Kerschner in the top of fifth extended the game to prevent an ISU run-rule victory.
Ochoa tallied another RBI on a ground ball that brought home Carli Spelhaug in the fifth for the final run of the game.
No. 17 Missouri 3, Iowa State 2
The Cyclones fell victim to a sixth-inning Tiger rally in the night cap despite out-hitting No. 17 Missouri, 11-6.
Iowa State jumped ahead 2-0 after plating both its runs in the top of the third inning. Williams hit a solo home run to lead off the frame on a ball driven deep to left. It was the senior's 13th home run of the season.
Ochoa later doubled to left center, and Logan Schaben capitalized with a RBI. Schaben singled to left center, allowing the speedy Ochoa to score, giving the Cyclones a 2-0 advantage.
Starting pitcher Saya Swain was among the bright spots for Iowa State. The freshman had the best performance of her young career under the bright lights of Mizzou Softball Stadium. Swain went 5.0 innings while allowing just two runs on four hits, and held the dangerous Tiger offense scoreless until the sixth inning.
Missouri's Alex Honnold collected a lead-off double, and an Abby George bunt followed by an ISU error allowed one run to cross home plate. Swain then exited the game for Ellie Spelhaug with a runner on second and no outs. Missouri later scored the tying and go-ahead run after a RBI single was compounded by another Cyclone error, allowing the Tigers to take their first lead of the night.
The Cyclones were unable to come up with a tying run in the top of the seventh, falling to 2-1 on the weekend.
