AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (22-6) staged a seventh-inning comeback but came up just short in a 9-7 loss to No. 1 Oklahoma (23-0) on Friday at the Cyclone Sports Complex. It was Iowa State's first home game since May 18, 2019.
The Cyclones scored five runs in the seventh inning but were unable to overcome the unbeaten Sooners in both teams' Big 12 opener.
Oklahoma 9, Iowa State 7
The Sooners started fast, capitalizing on a pair of first-inning Cyclone errors to plate two unearned runs. A sacrifice fly by Jayda Coleman capped the inning to give OU a 2-0 advantage.
Sami Williams brought the Cyclones to life in the second inning. Following a lead-off walk for Carli Spelhaug, Williams crushed a two-run homer over the fence in left field to knot the game at 2-2. The home run was Williams' 14th of the season, and was her 297th career hit, tying Iowa State's all-time record.
Sooner left fielder Jocelyn Alo answered, showing why she's the nation's leading home run hitter with a three-run shot in the top of the second inning to give the Sooners a 5-2 lead. Alo struck again in the top of the fourth with a two-run homer, making it a 7-2 Oklahoma lead.
Oklahoma scratched out runs in both the fifth and seventh innings to extend the lead to 9-2.
However, the Cyclones refused to go down without a fight. Abby Gunter singled to lead-off the seventh, followed by Malia Cockrell being hit by pitch. Their respective pinch runners would then advance to second and third on a fly out. Skyler Ramos started the Cyclone scoring with a RBI double down the left field line, scoring Lea Nelson.
Sami Williams then reached on OU's lone error of the day, allowing Angelica Gonzalez and Skyler Ramos to score, cutting the deficit to 9-5. Mikayla Ramos then dug in and hit a two-run home run down the left field line to make it 9-7.
However, star OU pitcher Giselle Juarez would finish the deal to improve to 8-0 on the season. Both Juarez and Cyclone starter Karlie Charles pitched the entire game. Charles battled a dangerous Oklahoma offense all day, ending the day with three strikeouts.
