AMES, Iowa – A big weekend of Iowa State wrestling is in store with the No. 9 Cyclones hosting California Baptist in its home and Big 12 opener Saturday at 8 p.m. inside Hilton Coliseum. A contingent of ISU grapplers will also be competing in the Grand View Open and Luther College Open.

Wrestling Team - Battle in the River City

TOP 10 CYCLONES
Iowa State broke into the top 10 of the NWCA poll this week, checking in at No. 9 after a 3-0 weekend at the Battle in the River City. ISU took eight of 10 matches from No. 12 Wisconsin in a 26-6 victory and defeated all five of the Badgers' returning All-Americans.

Iowa State's 16-match winning streak dating back to last season is the longest the Cyclones have put together since winning 17-straight duals from Feb. 13, 2004 to Jan. 21, 2005.

KEY STORYLINES

Freshman Paniro Johnson was named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week after defeating Wisconsin's No. 2 Austin Gomez at the Battle in the River City last weekend. Johnson posted a 2-0 weekend record in his Cyclone debut.
Another freshman, Casey Swiderski, made a statement in his first action as a Cyclone. He defeated two top 20 opponents last weekend in Campbell's No. 18 Shannon Hanna and Wisconsin's No. 11 Joseph Zargo.
Heavyweight Sam Schuyler picked up two wins against top 12 foes last weekend, Campbell's No. 12 Taye Ghadiali and Wisconsin's No. 11 Trent Hillger. Schuyler used a takedown in the final 45 seconds of both matches to secure the wins.
David Carr moved up a weight class to 165-pounds this season and seems to be adjusting well. He went 3-0 last weekend, including a victory over returning All-American and No. 5 Dean Hamiti of Wisconsin, 7-5.
