12.04.2022 | Wrestling
IOWA CITY, Iowa – No.7 Iowa State (5-1, 1-0 Big 12) suffered their first dual loss of the season to No. 2 Iowa (6-0, 0-0 BIG), 18-15, in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk series. The Cyclones and Hawkeyes each won five bouts, but bonus points were the difference as ISU's 17-dual win streak came to an end Sunday afternoon inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
"We battled today," head coach Kevin Dresser said. "I was proud of our guys' effort. I thought both teams showed up ready to wrestle. Obviously, when each team wins five matches, bonus points play a big factor and they were the better team in that regard today."
How it Happened
Iowa started the dual with bonus points at 125 pounds where No. 1 Spencer Lee made his season debut and defeated Corey Cabanban, 13-5.
Ramazan Attasauov got ISU on the board after he defeated Cullen Schriever, 3-1 at 133 pounds. Attausauov led 1-0 heading into the third period and, after a Schriever escape at 1:06, the match was tied at 1-1. With 25 seconds left in the match, Attasauov secured a takedown on the edge of the mat to earn a decision.
No. 10 Casey Swiderski came up just short in a chippy match against No. 2 Real Woods, 4-2, at 141 pounds.
Freshman Paniro Johnson outlasted No. 6 Max Murin in their matchup at 149 pounds. The match went to sudden victory tied, 1-1, where Johnson took down Murin with one second remaining in the period to win by decision, 3-1. It is Johnson's second win this season against a top-six opponent.
Iowa won three of the first five bouts, including a major decision at 157 pounds, to take an 11-6 advantage into intermission.
Iowa State's upper weights got the Cyclones back into the dual, starting with David Carr at 165 pounds, who took care of business against No. 13 Patrick Kennedy, winning a comfortable decision, 10-4.
No. 5 Marcus Coleman won a tight contest with No. 8 Abe Assad at 184 pounds, 3-1, after getting the winning takedown with 30 seconds remaining.
No. 6 Yonger Bastida's match at 197 against No. 2 Jacob Warner came down to the wire, with Bastida winning by decision, 4-3. After a pair of first period takedowns, Bastida led 4-1. In the third period, Warner earned an escape and penalty point, but Bastida was able to fend off a late attack to win 4-3.
The dual came down to the final match where No. 4 Tony Cassioppi earned a 9-2 decision against No. 9 Sam Schuyler.
