TEMPE, Ariz. -- Â Despite a five-run third inning for the Iowa State softball team (6-5, 0-0), the Cyclones fell to Arizona State 9-5 on Friday night in Tempe.
Arizona State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning but saw its lead go away in the top of the third inning.Â
In the top of the third inning, Angelina Allen hit her second home run of the season to trim the ASU lead to one. Following Allen's home run, Milaysia Ochoa singled, Tiana Poole reached base because of a Sun Devil error and Alesia Ranches brought home Ochoa after singling to right field. With two runners on base, Carli Spelhaug hit a go-ahead two-run double to give ISU its first lead 5-3.
In the final four innings of play, Arizona State scored six runs to defeat the Cyclones 9-5.
How It HappenedÂ
Iowa State went down in order in the top of the first inning.
Ellie Spelhaug made the start for the Cyclones in game one of the series.
The Sun Devils jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Despite loading the bases, Iowa State failed to plate a run in the top of the second inning.
Karli Charles replaced Ellie Spelhaug in the circle to begin the second inning.
Charles recorded a 1-2-3 inning in her first inning of work.
Iowa State scored five runs to take a 5-3 lead in the top of the third inning.
Mikayla Ramos forced a walk.
Angelina Allen hit a two-run home run to make it 3-2 ASU.
It was Allen's second home run of the season.

Ochoa advanced to second base.

Arizona State responded with two runs in the third inning to tie the game at five.
Saya Swain replaced Karlie Charles with one out in the third inning.
The Cyclones went down in order in the top of the fourth inning.
Saya Swain retired the Sun Devils in order in the fourth inning.
Despite back-to-back walks with two outs in the fifth, ISU failed to score the go-ahead run.
ASU scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 9-5 lead.
ISU went down in order in the top of the sixth inning.
Saya Swain shut the Sun Devils down in order in the sixth frame.
In the final frame, ISU managed to load the bases but failed to score any runs.

On Saturday, Iowa State will play two games against the Sun Devils before returning home to Ames. Game one is slated to start at 3 p.m. and game two is scheduled to start shortly after the conclusion of game one.
