AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State Cyclones (13-23) split their midweek doubleheader with the South Dakota State Jackrabbits (24-15) on Tuesday at Cyclone Sports Complex.
Mikayla Ramos recorded her 149th RBI in game two, which moves her into a tie for second place in school history for RBI in a career.
How it Happened
Game 1 – Iowa State 3, South Dakota State 4
After trailing for most of the matchup, Iowa State nearly tied game one at four apiece in the seventh inning, but the Jackrabbit defense showed some resilience and was able to fend off the Cyclones for a 4-3 victory.
Three straight walks to start the game led to three runs in the first inning for the Jackrabbits. Lindsey Culver delivered a two-RBI single to plate the opening runs of the contest and later came across herself to give SDSU a 3-0 lead.
The Iowa State offense got off to a fast start on Tuesday thanks to Angelina Allen's two-run homer in the first inning off Jackrabbit starting pitcher Shannon Lasey. Allen's home run was her third of the season.
The score would stand at 3-2 until the fifth inning when Mia Jarecki hit a solo home run to extend the Jackrabbit lead to 4-2.
The seventh inning saw Iowa State's first three hitters reach to begin the rally. Milaysia Ochoa would come in to score on a wild pitch to shrink the SDSU lead to 4-3, but a failed suicide squeeze would end the Cyclone rally in the seventh.
Jaiden Ralston (3-6) started game one for Iowa State, but only lasted three batters before being relieved by Karlie Charles. Over 4.2 innings, Charles would strike out a season-high six batters while allowing one run on four hits.
Shannon Lasey (9-6) picked up the win in the circle for the Jackrabbits.
Game 2 – Iowa State 8, South Dakota State 1
A balance of strong pitching and strong offense would propel the Cyclones in game two against the Jackrabbits.
Milaysia Ochoa slugged two home runs as part of three extra-base hits in the contest for Iowa State. Her two home runs marked the second time this season that she has recorded a multi-homer game and second time in nine days.
Mikayla Ramos continued her ascent up the ISU record books with her fifth-inning RBI single. She is now tied with Erica Miller for the second-most RBIs by a Cyclone.
Ellie Spelhaug (2-5) delivered a quality start for ISU in game two against SDSU, as she allowed one run over four innings while striking out two.
Saya Swain recorded the first save of her Cyclone career after recording the last nine outs of the game. Of those nine outs, five came via the punchout.
Alexa Williams (0-4) was saddled with loss for the Jackrabbits in game two after allowing eight runs (four earned runs) on seven hits.Â
