STILLWATER, Okla. – The Cyclones dropped the second game of the weekend series to the third-ranked Oklahoma State Cowgirls on Saturday afternoon, 3-2.
Iowa State (13-25, 1-10) was again the first team to score, notching a pair of runs in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Oklahoma State (39-3, 8-0 Big 12) made the most of its opportunities, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the third and using a solo blast to earn a one-run victory.
Angelina Allen drove in ISU's only runs as the sophomore had a 2RBI single which was one of just three Iowa State hits on the day.
Ellie Spelhaug went 2.1 innings for the Cyclones, allowing two runs before Saya Swain entered in relief. Swain would give up just one hit, however, it was a solo blast which gave OSU the edge. Oklahoma State starting pitcher Lexi Kilfoyl went the distance for the Cowgirls and struck out nine Cyclones.
How it Happened
After two straight scoreless innings, the Cyclones got on the board first in the top of the third. Alesia Ranches drew a leadoff walk to get a runner onboard. Sarah Tyree next came up to the plate and laid down a perfect bunt to advance Ranches and get herself to first. Mikayla Ramos came to the plate with two on and two outs and was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Angelina Allen delivered a bases-loaded single up the middle to plate both Ranches and Tyree to put ISU up 2-0.
The Cowgirls matched Iowa State's two runs with a pair of their own, rattling off four singles to bring runs across the plate and knot the score up at two-all.
Oklahoma State tacked on a third run in the bottom of the fourth as Morgyn Wynne pounded a solo home run over the left field wall to put the Cowgirls in front, 3-2.
The Cowgirls would carry the 3-2 lead into the top of the seventh where they forced ISU into a groundout for the first out and earned two punchouts to seal the game.
