STILLWATER, Okla. – In its final regular season road contest, Iowa State fell to Oklahoma State Thursday evening, 3-0, at Neal Patterson Stadium.
ISU (3-8-5, 1-4-3 Big 12) was stymied by OSU's defense, as the Cyclones were unable to find the back of the net against a team that's only given up six scores on the year. Oklahoma State (12-2-3, 5-2-2 Big 12) got a brace from Laudan Wilson as it earned its seventh win this season that featured at least three goals.
Lauren McConnell was the offensive creator for the Cyclones, as the senior launched four shots, placing one on goal, to lead the team. Ella Ciardullo was the only other Cyclone with multiple attempts, while nine ISU athletes in total had shots. Avery Gillahan again turned in a 6-plus save performance, her seventh of the year. Lauren Hernandez was the only Cyclone to play all 90 minutes in the field.
Oklahoma State's Laudan Wilson recorded her first brace of the year, scoring the team's first two goals of the match. Logan Heausler had the team's third score, while Lexi Lee had a pair of assists to lead the Cowgirls. OSU keeper Grace Gordon had three saves, picking up her eleventh shutout of the season.
Oklahoma State held a 22-13 shot advantage as well as a 10-3 shot on goal edge. Iowa State had seven saves to the Cowgirls' three, while OSU had more corners, 7-4.
How it Happened
Both teams were playing inspired soccer out of the gate, as the first half was truly a back-and-forth battle.
Iowa State took the first crack in the third minute, as a Joryn Herrera shot kicked things off. Oklahoma State would then rattle off seven of its ten first-half shots in the next 20 minutes but were turned away multiple times by Gillahan.
The Cyclones responded with their own flurry of opportunities in the 30-35th minutes. A pair of shots from McConnell and one from each of Ciardullo and Hernandez were unsuccessful as the two teams continued to fight a scoreless battle.
The Cowgirls finished the stanza with a flurry, ripping off three shots in the final three minutes of action, but the two teams would head into the break knotted at zero. At the half, OSU held a 10-8 shot advantage, while Iowa State had a 3-2 save edge.
The second half was a different story, as the Cowgirls came out of the break and almost immediately punched one home, just 45 seconds into the half. Six early shots from the Cowgirls would eventually end in a breakthrough for OSU, as Wilson connected on a score in the 57th minute.
Oklahoma State would use its momentum to snowball the score a bit, picking up two more goals within the next 13 minutes to put the game out of reach, going on to win 3-0.
Fannon's Thoughts
"We really felt like we were playing well, and our game plan had put us on top, but we were hit with the first goal and let the atmosphere impact us a bit too much from there."
